Recovering from the War: A Woman's Guide to Helping Your Vietnam Vet, Your Family, and Yourself
Published in Paperback by Patience Press (1990)
Author: Patience H. Mason
Average review score:

The best resource for understanding PTSD and it's affect!
Four years ago my Vietnam Vet husband of 26 years invited me to a new VA couple's group through the PCT clinic. The director tried his best to give us the resources and help he could. He offered me a copy of Patience Mason's book. There is so much knowledge through information & personal accounts; I believe anyone who reads it will find "the light shining in the darkness" of living with a PTSD survivor. I have highly recommended it to all spouses, family members, friends, clergy, and therapists, as well as the Vets themselves who are looking for insight and support. Even better that it's now available in an affordable paperback!

I'm not alone!
This book is an excellent counseling tool for the spouses of combat veterans who live with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have given this book the many spouses. Many say that the greatest thing the book does for them is help to show that they are not alone in their experience with the veteran PTSD sufferer. Patience Mason gives the spouse an understanding of what is going on that leads to a sense of comfort and the courage to continue the battle. The battle, is to find a way to stay with their vet and at the same time preserve their own sanity. This is the best book out there for contents and ease of reading!

This book is the best!
This book was so helpful to me... I keep buying it and giving it away! It is the best book I have read on coping with PTSD, and I have read them all. It tells you what to expect and why. Who to contact in the VA for help. What forms will need to be filled out and how to deal with all the government agencies. Also lists several self-help groups. Everything from A to Z. It will give you a whole new understanding of your father, brother, husband, or significant other.

Sanibel & Captiva: A Guide to the Islands
Published in Paperback by Coconut Press (08 January, 2002)
Authors: Julie Neal and Mike Neal
Average review score:

Fantastic!
We are really enjoying this book. There's so much information, and I love the photos. My husband and I have never been to Sanibel or Captiva (we're planning a trip later this year), but reading about the islands is relaxing and helps us escape our stressful jobs.

Answers a lot of questions
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book cover to cover and learned a lot of things I never knew even after 9 years of coming to the islands. The book provided answers to a lot of questions I've always had, such as... how Sanibel ever managed to keep fast food places off the islands! I showed it to my uncle and aunt who live on Sanibel and they thought it was wonderful too. Looking through my copy wasn't good enough -- they are going to pick up their own. When I returned home, I loaned the book to a co-worker who spends 3 weeks each year on Sanibel. He can't put the book down!

Fantastic guide to the Islands!
I love this book! My family is planning a second visit to Sanibel this summer, and we have gotten so much helpful information from this guide. The information and reviews are quite thorough...the pictures are awesome! We can't wait to go back to the Islands and try out some new sights, restaurants, and much more...Thank you, Neal Family!

Secret Survivors: Uncovering Incest and Its Aftereffects in Women
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1990)
Author: E. Sue Blume
Average review score:

Excellent presentation of a difficult topic.
Secret Survivors is an extraordinarily compassionate and insightful book covering everything from impact on survivors and family dynamics to what is required for healing from incest. Not only is it an excellent resource, it's a pleasure to read in spite of the subject matter because of Blume's eloquent writing. I think Secret Survivors is a must read for anyone healing from or treating survivors of incest.

Read it once. Then read it again.
Read this book. If you are a survivor, or the partner or non-offending parent of a survivor, a sibling or a friend, this book provides powerful insight that can only enhance the healing process. I have now read it twice, and only got more out of it the second time. I did so much reading when I was first in recovery, 12 years ago, that I forgot where I learned what. I now know that the roots of my healing and the basis for the healthy, fulfilling relationships I have today can be attributed, primarily, to the truly valuable, readable and useful information in Secret Survivors. Read it once. Then read it again. You will not be sorry.

More than surviving
This is a wonderful book on the after effects of incest. It is healing and validating to know that my reactions are normal given what I have endured. I like that the after effects are specific, and accurate to incest survivors (other books have lists that are too vague or universal). I have found this book to have a great balance between focusing on transcending our pasts while also acknowledging all of our feelings, troubles and after effects. I did not find this book to be angry or harsh (as some others are). Healing from incest is quite a journey. This book is a valuable resource that I re-read, highlight passages, and lend to friends who seek to understand what I have endured and how valiantly I have survived and continue to grow. This book has so much in it: a section for partners, understanding and forgiving our mothers, honoring our survival skills, learning to understand and stop blaming ourselves, handling flashbacks and much more. This book has been a blessing in my life. It honors and re-educates us, who have been silenced, hurt, and disbelieved for far too long. E. Sue Blume has done a great service to us, and this world. I wish I could thank her myself. ...I will end this review with a quote from Secret Survivors: "Facing a problem is a rebirth. Frequently, I am struck by the perfection of this symbolism with regard to many types of clients, but none more than the woman who is working to resolve the aftereffects of incest. Purifying a sin that was not hers, she becomes her own parent. How can we fail to celebrate the incest survivor? Through healing and finding her power, she is, like the phoenix, reborn." (p. 299) Good Luck to you all on your journey towards peace and wholeness.

Remembering Slavery: African Americans Talk About Their Personal Experiences of Slavery and Emancipation
Published in Paperback by New Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Ira Berlin, Marc Favreau, Steven F. Miller, James H. Billington, and Robin D.G. Kelley
Average review score:

Excellently laid out and graphically told
There can be no more powerful telling of the history of slavery in the United States than to read it and hear it from the slaves' own mouths. Their recollections are, for the most part, graphic and chilling, but the diversity of these life experiences are also rich with good stories, too....slaves bonding together, looking out for one another and at times outwitting their masters and overseers. While the general knowledge of salvery has been known to many Americans for years, it is the actual detailed accounts of day-to-day life that make this book come alive. I hadn't known, for instance, that slaves were required to have passes in order to travel off the plantations or that Christmas and New Year's were largely times of rejoicing for both slave families and their master's families. Yet for the rest of the year the hardships and conditions that most slaves witnessed was incredible....beatings often for no reason, no shoes or lack of other clothing during the winter cold and often not nearly enough food. The clarity with which these former slaves recall their life 80 years or more before is an indication of how etched in their young minds life had been. The accompanying audio cassettes were the main reason l bought the book and they simply added a human dimension to the whole story. l had only two small disappointments with the audio segment....l would rather have had none of the actors read the transcripts...(the actual slave voices are far more powerful) and l wish that photos of the slave speakers could have been provided.... while there were many photos of the former slaves in the book they were not the photos of the slaves who made the audio tapes. In a time where revisionist history seems to be the rage it is, in a strange way, rather comforting to hear these stories told by the people who lived them. How these men and women suffered under bondage and lived for so many years afterward to finally tell about it is a tribute to their spirit and courage.

Powerful and Enlightening
I am currently a high school student that read part of this for a Civil War class and let me say this is one powerful book. With people who were the slaves themselves tell you their stories, you learn alot about the antebellum period. I would recommend this book for any mature person due to the fact that some of these stories show the true horror of slavery.

Extremely Interesting but sometimes a Tearjerker!
For several years I've been reading powerful thought-provoking slave narratives. This is probably the most moving due to accompanying tapes of slaves discussing their thoughts and conditions when they were slaves. This book and tapes should be used in every high school American and World history classes. I recommend this book to everyone above the age of twelve. If you want to begin educating your children earlier about American history, specifically slavery have them read K.J. McWilliams books; The Journal of Darien Duff, an Emancipated Slave, The Diary of a Slave Girl, Ruby Jo, and The Journal of Leroy Jones, a Fugitive Slave. They are based on slave narratives such as this one and include many interesting photos as well as additional information.

Road Rules Journals
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (November, 1998)
Author: Alison Pollet
Average review score:

Awesome! You get to read their diaries!
This book rocks. The Road Rulers kept diaries on the road, and we get to see them! Plus they made cartoons and drawings and stuff. And, there's lots of dirt you'd never know just from watching the show! Totally cool.

I hate to read, but I finished this in just 2 Days! Great!
This book had tons of information. It really made you feel like you were there. It gives you how cast members really felt about what the other cast members were doing. It gives you the FULL story, not the part that Bunim/Murray wants you to hear. You actually find out the reason the cast members were arguing, not just the argument. I hate to read, but I finished this book in just two days. Better than Road Rules: Passport Abroad and In the House: Real World Seattle. If you only plan to get one book about The Real World or Road Rules, this is the one!

Information that even the most avid of fans never knew
As an almost-obsessive fan of both the Real World and Road Rules, this was definitely one of the better books. Even if you have watched every episode of the shows, like I have, you should get this book. It tells what really happened with the romances and fights; what cast members really thought of each other, and it even contains lost missions that were unable to make it onto the show. I would recommend this book to anyone who has seen the show. So order it today!

Q Is for Quantum : An Encyclopedia of Particle Physics
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (February, 1999)
Author: John Gribbin
Average review score:

Fundamental Mysteries
John Gribbin's "Schrödinger's Kittens" was a revelation for
the casual reader with an interest in particle physics. In "Q is
for Quantum" these amazing insights are presented in short,
succinct, manageable 'quanta'. Many of these statements and models
baffle, and read like the pronouncements of a first-century Gnostic on
how the universe and the fabric of reality are ordered. The difference
is that all these statements are buttressed by experiments and
mathematical models. Moreover, they are often ratified to a staggering
degree of accuracy.

How can we believe that reality is radically
altered by our observation of it? Even to the extent that our
observations of distant quasars today affect the way the light
emerged from them 10 billion years ago? How can particles be at two
places at once? How does every charged particle on the other side of
the Andromeda galaxy (2 million light years away) instantaneously
"know" if we poke an electron here on earth (see the entry
on "transactional interpretation")? I would suggest you read
the introduction to this book, and then the entry on "double-slit
experiment" and, as the author suggests, " ...follow your
nose from there." These shed light, albeit it a dim ray, on the
central mysteries of quantum mechanics.

A very great book!
This is a great reference book for quantum mechanics! Covers a large variety of different topics of the quantum world. Full of interesting facts and diagrams! Great for any science nerd!

Quality quanta.
If you read physics popularizations you have noticed (and appreciated) the glossaries that appear in the back of many of these books. If you've wanted a more thorough reference resource for quantum physics terminology -- here it is. Reference texts are not generally going to tempt the reader to start at the beginning and read through the entire volume, but this one will. Gribbin, familiar to many readers of physics books, writes clearly and covers all of the significant developments, personalities, and ideas of particle physics over the past century. An excellent resource, from 'Absolute zero' to 'Z particles.'

Rachel's Journal: The Story of a Pioneer Girl
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (May, 2001)
Author: Marissa Moss
Average review score:

A must read for children
This is the story of ten year old Rachel traveling with her family from Illinois to California. She keeps a journal that is more of a scrapbook of their adventures and disasters along the way. Rachel puts in pictures of things that she doesn't want to forget making this book all the more enjoyable. The ending is abrupt but the rest of the story puts you right there with her family.

An Adventure...
This book was quite interesting. It is a story of a young girl, Rachel who is traveling by covered wagon from Illinois to California with her family in the 1850's. She keeps a journal/scrapbook of their adventures/disasters. Her illustrations or "doodles" in this journal were very well done. They clearly defined a great deal of what life was like for any family back then and the courage that they had in order to seek what they thought was going to "better" their way of living.

Loved this Book!
Just like Marissa Moss' "Amelia" books, this was a hand-written, journal-style book, with lots of pictures. It is the journal of ten-year-old Rachel, who travels with her family of pioneers from Illinois to California in search of a better place to live. In her journal, she records the trip and there are many details! It has humor thrown in, great pictures, and a nice journal format. I've enjoyed reading this book, and I can't wait to read all of Marissa Moss' other historical journals.

Revolutionary Suicide
Published in Paperback by Writers & Readers (April, 1995)
Authors: Huey P. Newton and J. Herman Blake
Average review score:

A must read
If you're going to study the Black Panther Party, you of course must check out a story of its preminent leader. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. He gave me an understanding what it meant to be a radical Black activist during the 60s and 70s. It meant that you had to be courageous, committed, and five steps ahead of the cops, the FBI, and informants.

Of course, now, this is Huey's account of the Party. While his is seriously important, the works of other Panthers and scholars who are now publishing works about the Panthers must also be studied. For now that I'm reading a biography on another Panther leader, Geronimo Pratt, I'm very interested in understanding more about the political split that took place in the BPP. Why did Huey expell Pratt from the Party? Why did Eldridge Cleaver turn out to be so reactionary? I look forward to reading other books on the Panthers to answer these and other questions.

This book was powerful in every detail.
I felt as though this book was very powerful in expressing the reality of every African-American in society that lives in an urban area. Huey Newton is a powerful writer, but his books are often not read becuase of the fact that limitations are place on him because of his staus. I feel as though his books should be read by every one in order to understand our struggle and also African-Americans as a race and The Black Panther Party as a group. I give this book infinite stars and I think this book should be read by every intellectual and every conscious mind that's open to all possiabilities of reveloution. Stay Strong everyone and always remember the struggle. Peace!!!!!

A True American Revolutionary!
This book is a great read, it is powerful, every chapter starts with a relevant quote, usually by a Socialist leader. It is filled with the incidents of huey's life and his beliefs. It is clearly written and shows the strong convictions of the man in affirming personal freedom and justice, and his belief that it can be done. Through all the trials and tribulations he went through, and through the rhetoric that went back and forth between the panthers and government, Huey manages to steer away from cliches, (though he interestingly describes the way they came up with the word "pig" for cops.) I was fortunate enough to pick this book up in middle school after hearing about huey newton on a rap album, and being curious. I don't understand why it is so hard to find. I have found Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice recently, and find it amazingly honest in a way that huey doesn't get, with his personal life and weaknesses. And Bobby Seale, the other founder, has written some books as well. Its unproductive to talk about which is better. This one is great.

Roy Buchanan: American Axe
Published in Paperback by Backbeat Books (01 September, 2001)
Author: Phil Carson
Average review score:

The Soul of Roy
This is not only a great rock biography, but a great biography period. Though most "rock stars" seek the spotlight, Roy avoided it. Yet Carson has managed to get closer to who he was than most bio writers get to their subjects, who give the public a persona but hide themselves more cleverly than R. B. This book is of interest to Roy fans, rock or country guitar afficianados, anyone interested in the early history of white rock and roll and anyone interested in exploring the world of a conflicted genius. Carson spends important time describing the early days of Buchanan in small town California. This is much more than the usual cursory treatment, for the seeds of who he became were rooted there. Carson makes few judgements, and lets Roy's friends and fellow players provide much of the insight. In many ways a sad story, but not maudlin. Although you wish it could have turned out differently, maybe it could not have. Buchanan was a man who had a chance at what we call everything, and turned it down to play his own music his own way. Was he a tragic figure or a hero? Read this book and decide for yourself.

World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist - American Axe
I'm a huge fan of Roy Buchanan, so no doubt I was excited when I heard about this full-length biography. Despite the fact that Roy was the most talented of the guitar virtuosos of our time, his music remained largely unknown for the general audience. And even for a hardcore fans, little was known about Roy's life and background.

The author Phil Carson concentrates on the musician Roy Buchanan. He has done a throughout research work on Roy's early influences, as well as interviewed and collected other musicians experiences with Roy. Despite being a fan, the author manages to give us an objective, and also a critical view of Roy's work. The numerous anecdotes given in the book lighten up the story.

This is essential book not only for those specifically interested in Roy Buchanan and his music, but also for guitar players in general as Roy's guitars and techniques are presented.

And while reading it be sure you have some of Roy's music in your stereo!

Roy Buchanan fans rejoice!
At long last comes a book that, for the first time, gives a detailed look into the life and music of this gifted (and largely unheralded) guitarist.

Even those unfamiliar with Roy's particular genius will find "American Axe" a fascinating chronicle. The book provides not only insight into Roy's early influences but gives an historical perspective to the very beginnings of rock and roll itself. You get a real feel for what life on the club circuit was like for the journeyman musician in the 50's and 60's.

Phil Carson has obviously taken great pains to garner first-hand accounts about Roy from family, friends and musical colleagues in order to piece together some understanding of what made Roy tick as accurately and fairly as possible. Roy was generally media-shy so there are many eye-opening revelations here.

I couldn't make a higher recommendation for this book. It is a much overdue and welcome addition to the Roy Buchanan fan's collection.

Shock Value: A Tasteful Book About Bad Taste
Published in Paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (December, 1995)
Author: John K. Waters
Average review score:

"Shock Value" is a wonderful read!

Even if you're not a fan of John Waters' films, I don't think you could put down this fascinating book once you've started reading it. It details the bizarre productions of several of his films as well as his own personal pasttimes and obsessions (which are almost always hilariously deviant). If you only read one entertainment book this year...here it is! I also strongly recommend Crackpot and Trash Trio (a collection of screenplays), also written by John Waters. Happy Reading--Jeremy Gentry

John Waters rules
I read this book in its french translation "Provocation" and it's one of the best I've ever read in the genre. It's funny, clever, sincere. I'm a big fan of Big John's work but reading this, I've discovered he was not only the king of bad taste but also a very moving person who's faithful in friendship and in his ideas. I can only recommend this maserpiece to anybody who's open-minded and wants to discover one of the most brilliant filmmaker of his generation.

Delightful, distasteful, nauseating and fun!
This book is impossible to describe in one word. It's no surprise that Water's life is funnier, and more bizare then any of his films can ever hope to be. We learn about Baltimore life, his childhood, Divine, Edith Masey, Pink Flamingos,Desperate Living, and more. THIS needs to be his next film project! The only thing sad about this book is that it feels dated at certain parts (especially when it refers to Divine in the present tense, since this was written before he died...and before Cookie Muller died...and Edith Masey). But it remains a fascinating read that really encourages people to feel grateful for living in Baltimore(or makes you wish you lived there).
