Los Angeles First Class
I am anxiously awaiting this book! It's about time that someone wrote information about people, places and businesses that I so desperately am always looking for. Every place of employment in Los Angeles should have "FIRST CLASS LOS ANGELES" on their shelf!

This book is the real thing.
I've worked as a personal assistant for over 15 years and this book contains exactly the information that has taken me 15 years to compile AND MORE! Anyone who works for people who expect the best should buy this book and impress their boss by having all the best resources! This will save any assistant years of research and the added benefit of the peace of mind in knowing that everyone listed in this book are competent of delivering on their promise.

Shop like the stars. What the hell! Shop WITH the stars!
This is a wonderful compilation of shops and services that celebrities have patronized. Ms. Elias has done a wonderful job putting together her career experience with Hollywood stars by divulging their little secrets on where they shop for toys, where they dine, where and who does their hair and other goods and services that they take advantage of.

You'd be surprised at some of the places tehy go. You may just run into these stars buying Barbies or getting a bikini wax next to you. Can you imagine a hairstylist using the same pair of scissors that were used on Bette Midler to cut your own hair? Or Bette Midler's mermaid tail brushing up against your dinner jacket at the dry cleaners?

Even if you don't use the book for needed services, it's a fun peek into the lives of your favorite celebrities. Buy this book!

Lauren Bacall by Myself
Published in Hardcover by Random House (January, 1979)
Author: Lauren Bacall
Average review score:

A Life Well-Lived Makes for Good Reading
I like a good star biography (or autobiography) as much as the next person, but this one is exceptional. Lauren "Betty" Bacall is an intelligent, humorous and honest writer. Her romance with Bogie, as she tells it in the book, becomes even more legendary. A densely written autobiography, it is still a page turner and kept my interest even after I had read past the zenith of her career (which is where I usually put the book down and move on). If you are interested in the Golden Age of Hollywood, the Studio System, Great Movie Stars and Famous Lovers--this is the book for you.

Bacall is Wonderful
This is the best autobiography I have ever read! It was such a page turner, from the begining of her career as a model, to her years with Bogie, to her stage WOW what a woman and what a book

Autobiography, Love Story, ect.
Great instite to the life a Hollywood legend. Ms. Bacall speaks candidly about a truly amazing life. Unlike other autobiographies she includes hard times and faces up to mistakes she's made. The love story between her and Bogie is amazing and it's refreshing that she doesn't embellish it while sharing something so personal. Loved the sense of humor and class. Thoughout all the tragedies in her life she mainly focuses on it's positive aspects.

Licit and Illicit Drugs; The Consumers Union Report on Narcotics, Stimulants, Depressants, Inhalants, Hallucinogens, and Marijuana - Including Caffei

Authors: Edward M. Brecher and Consumer Reports Book

READ THIS BOOK
As a psychologist working in the field of drug addiction I am constantly dealing with misinformation and propaganda about the dangers (both relative and absolute) of various drugs. Parents who are concerned that their teenage children might be using "dangerous drugs" rather than just getting drunk on the weekends and smoking cigarettes, etc. This book is an outstanding source for historical information about the development of our attitudes towards drugs, the role they play in our society, a straightforward, non-technical presentation of the psychological and biological actions of various drugs, and the effects of our current drug policies. Coupled with "From Chocolate to Morphine" (another must read book) a reader will have a great fund a basic information about drugs and our relationship to them. I only wish this book would be updated and reprinted - though, unfortunately, not nearly enough has changed since this book was first published.

The most readable analysis of drug policy ever written
It's amazing how many of the "facts" that we think
we know about drugs are wrong. It's even more
amazing that we continue to base drug policy on
myths that were disproven as much as a hundred
years ago. It's amazing that we continue to
pursue prohibitionist drug policies that have
never withstood the scrutiny of objective
evaluation. Read this book. You'll be astonished.

Everyone should read this book
Even though this book is nearly 30 years old, everything it says about the drug problem is still relevant today.

This publication outlined a clear-cut set of recommendations that if adhered to, today's drug problems would have become a long forgotten memory.

This book is a must for the collection.

Liddle Kiddles
Published in Paperback by Collector Books (December, 1995)
Author: Paris Langford
Average review score:

Think you know all about Kiddles? Guess AGain!
Paris Lanford's LIDDLE KIDDLES Indentification and Value Guide is more than just another price guide for those who want to sell dolls that they happen to pick up at garage sales and flea markets. The book, a Kiddle Kollector's dream, is more like a tribute to, and reminder of, the dreams of young girls whose biggest worries are coloring in between the lines and whether or not mother will be serving brussel sprouts with dinner.

This book takes one back in time, where for that short period while reading, one can pretend to be ten again, or eight, or six. Paris' book is unique in that it amuses and entertains as well as it informs.

It also fulfills a need. The need of the passionate collector. No other collecting book I have read has so fulfilled its obligation to the reader because no other author, in my experience, has gone to such lengths to give every detail, however minute, her full attention.

I speak for the entire kiddle kommunity when I say thank you.Paris. The guide is not only a godsend for the kollector, but a fabulous adult read.

"Liddle Kiddles" a must have for collectors
An excellent source for the identification of Liddle Kiddle dolls and all the accessories. Paris has written THE book as far as Kiddles are concerned. I have two and am going to buy a third--this book is invaluable to me.

Excellent Doll Guide , and a trip down memory lane !
Paris Langford's Liddle Kiddle Guide, is not only full of information and pictures for the novice, it contains the utmost details for the most advanced collector also. Doll dealers can obtain valuable pointers for matching up dolls with accessories, and a value guide to boot ! THE MOST comprehensible, complete book to date on the market.I would not be able to collect, trade nor sell my kiddle with out this book!!!!

Just Give Me the Damn Ball!: The Fast Times and Hard Knocks of an NFL Rookie
Published in Hardcover by Warner Books (May, 1997)
Authors: Keyshawn Johnson, Shelley Smith, and Shelly Reeves Smith
Average review score:

A great no bull NFL biography
In this wonderful biography Keyshawn sayes what really happens in football. It ia a must read for any football fan. He tells it like it is on things like agents, his life, the NFL, and the Jets 1-15 season.

Keyshawn's Book of Prophecy
This highly controversial book provides a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts of a future hall of fame receiver. Keyshawn speaks with candor about his rookie season and many of his comments seem prophetic in light of the Jet's recent successes. This is a highly entertaining and engaging read.

Great Book
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I always liked Keyshawn, but after reading this book I really like him. An excellent biography of his life and his season with the Jets.

Kennedy Weddings: A Family Album
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Jay Mulvaney and Doris Kearns Goodwin
Average review score:

A good book...however
As a long time admirer of the Kennedy's I really liked this book. The up til now unpublished photographs are wonderful... however I was left wondering why the "first" wives of all the Kennedy men were given no more than a nod.. most notable was Joan Bennett's wedding to Ted. A few pictures and little text were all that were afforded them. Perhaps there was not very much cooperation on the part of the ex Mrs. Kennedy's but for what ever reason is it jarring. Also Robin Lawford is shown and mentioned at her sister's weddings.. however in the family chart at the front of the book she is left out. Perhaps I am being picky about a book that shows us the good times in this family. The radiant brides and the handsome grooms on the happiest days of their lives are touching and memorable.

I saw this book on the TODAY SHOW and had to buy it.
Jay Mulvaney was on the TODAY show talking about this wonderful book all full of photographs from all the different Kennedy weddings...and it was so nice to finally see a happy book about the Kennedy family. The book is wonderful...it's got so many pictures, but also tells the whole story of the family and the many wonderful things they've done throughout the years. My favorite family was the Shrivers...they are so gorgeous, Maria of course, but also her brothers Anthony, Mark and Timothy. There are lots of stories and anecdotes from each of the weddings, and you get to see some honeymoon photos and pictures of wedding gifts and so many private photographs of the Kennedys. a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes the Kennedys and who likes weddings.

Beautifully written, beautifully laid-out
Although rather voyeuristic in its concept, this book is a lovely scrapbook of the nuptials of America's most famous political family.

The photographs are poignant and artful, and the text, while syncophantic, is illuminating with all sorts of wedding minutiae.

The only error I've found in the book is the omission of Robin Lawford in the family tree at the front of the book; all other Kennedy cousins are present in the tree, but Robin must have flown the coop.

You'll enjoy this book, if such books are your sort of thing.

Last Man Out: A Personal Account of the Vietnam War
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ballantine Books (02 May, 2000)
Author: Jr. James E. Parker
Average review score:

Excellent Personal Vietnam War Account
If my son were to enter the service, I would require him to read Mr Parker's book. The details of how to survive Army life are staight forward and important. I found the book easy and enjoyable to read. Could not put it down. As with any super book, I often found myself looking at the number of pages left to read-the more the merrier. Mr. Parker has truely made something of himself and the people of the United States have reaped the benefits. Thank you Mr. Parker.

Compelling and Precise
This book is a necessary and thorough follow-up to the author's first account of his involvement in southeast Asia on behalf of our government: CovertOps. It is yet another compelling story in exquisite detail and poignant analysis of his development as an infantry officer into a paramilitary officer and finally into a skilled case officer for CIA. It provides the essentials for anyone considering such a career, as well as properly articulated facts for historians and others who are interested in hearing "the other side of the story" about those who served with honor, dignity and courage (or as he would put it, "hang")in a noble cause to preserve, protect, and defend freedom on behalf of our country. His wit, humor, objectivity, and humility are testimony to his credibility as a professional in service to his country and as a skilled writer. Read now with the advantage of historical hindsight, it brings into focus with uncommon clarity and precision what we were fighting for then, and the political and social values that our efforts there continue to serve our national interests today, despite what many conclude was a lost war.

A true accounting of his time in the military!
Last Man Out: A Personal Account of the Vietnam War by James E. Parker, Jr. is the best book I've read in a long time. If this author didn't have a tape recorder or a diary that he wrote in everyday then I have to say he has a most remarkable memory. James takes the reader back to his home in North Carolina and introduces his family and friends. He continues as he makes the decision to enlist in the Army at a time when others were already doing everything they could to avoid serving their country. The reader goes through Basic Training with James and his buddies at Fort Gordon, Georgia in February 1964. Two months later after being named "Outstanding Trainee" James reiterates some of his time while at his Advanced Infantry Training. You are there when he signs up for Officer Candidate School and while he waited to be selected. You go through that six-month course with him too beginning in November at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon graduation James goes to Jump School. From there the book gets even better. James first Permanent Party duty station was at Fort Riley, Kansas with the 1st Infantry Division. Then through his Tour of Duty in Vietnam. James told about an encounter with General William Westmoreland following a mission. The general flew in to review the troops, present medals and then was gone. It was a mere media event. When the general departed, another officer walked the line and took back the medals. After Nam James next assignment took him to Fort Ord in Monterey, California. He became the Officer-in-Charge of the 6th Army Area Drill Sergeant School. It was a great assignment. BUT James was thinking about leaving the Army but he "felt guilty about forsaking my duty, abandoning my obligation to country at a time of war." Unable to find a job that suited him he applied for and was accepted as a member of the Central Intelligence Agency. By September 1971 James was headed back to Southeast Asia "as a case officer in the Lao program, the CIA's largest covert operation." James was involved with several operations before heading stateside in 1973. He spoke openly about them. By January 1975 James was the only American left in Vi Thanh province. At that point he secured himself a "bodyguard." James wrote of the fall of Ban Me Thout, Hue, Da Nang, and Saigon. He took part in the evacuation of the Vietnamese who worked as agents for the CIA. He spoke of the problems encountered onboard the USS Vancouver and the transfer to the USNS Pioneer Contender. James Parker Jr. wrote an incredible account of his military and civilian service to our country and the people of South Vietnam. It is a book well worth reading. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet the author in person in 1998. AND I'm glad I took the time to read his book. You will be also.

Letters for the Living: Teaching Writing in a Violent Age (Refiguring English Studies)
Published in Paperback by National Council of Teachers of English (May, 1998)
Authors: Michael Blitz and C. Mark Hurlbert
Average review score:

Something happened.
Something happened to me when I read Letters for the Living. I'm not sure what it is. I have been an adjunct, a tenure-track assistant professor, a high school teacher, and most recently a counselor in a division for troubled youths. After reading this book by Blitz and Hurlbert, I feel as though I understand my career(s) for the first time. I am doing what I can to make peace. I teach for peace. Letters for the Living is so moving, I wish it were available in every bookstore. I want to tell everyone to read this book, to appreciate the kind of friendships, experiences, and heartbreaking violence--and peace, yes--that fill the book with real power to make a difference in the lives of readers. Wonderful wonderful wonderful.

A book everyone should read
Too few academic books can hold an audience of non-academics. Blitz and Hurlbert have written a book that not only holds us, but rivets our attention from the first page to the last. The stories their students tell of violence combined with the stories--letters--Blitz and Hurlbert exchange throughtout the book, make for a narrative experience every bit as gripping as a fine novel. Parents of college students, fellow teachers, and students themselves should read this book. Somehow, we are all in this story, and Blitz and Hurlbert do a remarkable job in making us examine ourselves as makers of the society where violence has forced its way into everyday life.

What IS this book?
I came across this book on Amazon (no surprise)because I was looking to see if anyone with my last name had ever written a book. Surprise! I share a last name with one of the authors of _Letters for the Living_, so I got the book. I'm not a teacher (or a student for that matter), so I didn't have much hope to be too interested. WRONG!! This book moved me. It reads like a novel or a strange journal about real people who have gone through some unbelievable experiences. And what makes it more gripping is that these two authors are completely up-front about their experiences as teachers of kids who have lived through incredible violence. Michael Blitz and C. Mark Hurlbert sound like the kind of teachers we all wish we had. I know I hope my own kids can have teachers like this when they are in college. What a powerful book! All I can say is, read it!

Keeping Good People: Strategies for Solving the #1 Problem Facing Business Today
Published in Paperback by Oakhill Press (01 March, 1999)
Author: Roger E. Herman
Average review score:

A Book to Study and USE!
In today's job market, it is challenging to attract the best-qualified and well-suited job applicants. It is even more difficult to retain excellent employees. The cost of employee turnover is high in terms of lost productivity, lost knowledge, and financial expense associated with filling the vacancy.

Roger Herman, futurist and certified management consultant and speaker, provides an exceptional resource for any organization seeking to retain its best employees. Keep Good People is divided into three sections. The first effectively sets the stage by providing valuable insights into the competitive nature of the job market, the value of good employees, and what prompts employees to stay and leave an employer. The first section provides essential background that led to an essential, yet basic understanding of employer/employee relations regarding retention. Section two provides nearly 200 very specific and useful strategies. Each strategy is clearly defined and concisely explained. Herman does not stop with a somewhat overwhelming list of strategies, yet provides suggestions for implementation and an "eye to the future" in section three.

Keep Good People is an excellent resource for human resource professionals and managers seeking to prevent undesirable employee turnover as well for the organizations seeking to reduce turnover. Use this book as a guide to simply review current practices and development of strategic, and it will be well worth the investment of both time and money.

Loaded with ideas!
I've looked through several books on employee retention and this one takes the prize! I was amazed at how much information was packed into a little over 400 pages. From reading this book, I now have a much better understanding of the trends...the big picture of why people jump from job to job. The five reasons why people leave was really thought-provoking. The strategy section is well organized and full of great ideas. I found the book easy to read from cover to cover and I'm now using the index and detailed table of contents to find specific information I need. Very well put together...worth far more than the price.

Keeping Good People will help me do just that.
With the increasing concern for building a stable workforce today, this book is absolutely right on target. It does no good to hire good people if you can't keep them. I was delighted with the style of this book. It's so easy to read and understand. The organization of the chapters, presenting almost 200 strategies for keeping people, is just perfect for conveying all this information. I read the book from cover to cover, but see how it can serve as a great reference tool, too. Now I see why it's the #5 best seller for the Society for Human Resource Management. I'd sure give "Keeping Good People" five stars!

Last Suppers: Famous Final Meals from Death Row
Published in Paperback by Loompanics Unlimited (September, 2001)
Authors: Ty Treadwell and Michelle Vernon
Average review score:

Informational and Entertaining
The Last Suppers captured my attention immediately and I read it cover to cover in less than four hours. I simply could not put it down. This book covers famous final meals from death row and it is stuffed full of fascinating details about everything from who ate what (and why, in some cases) to what landed them on death row. Even more amazing than the sheer size of some of the meals are the jailhouse recipes in mammoth proportions and the fabulous sense of humor that the authors use to deliver the dirt on death row. Even though the crimes that these criminals committed were heinous, the authors relate the facts with grace, humor and objectivity, keeping the reader interested and turning pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone with a sense of humor and looking for a great chili recipe for a LARGE family!

More Meals, Please!
Such fun reading this was! I have never thought much about the final meals of the people on death row before. It was truly fascinating to read of their journey to that place in their lives..then to see just what they picked to end it with!

I really enjoyed the style of writing...it made me want more. Let's have even more receipes if there's a Last Suppers II!

A book worth reading
I have to admit I was somewhat skeptical about "Last Suppers" before I read it, just because...well, it is a book about inmates' last meals! But once I started reading it, I could not put it down until I had read it all. It is about meals, all right, but there is much more to this book than that. In a very unusual way, it deals with the controversy, created by a strictly American phenomena - the death penalty. And this makes "Last Suppers" quite an interesting reading both to Americans and people like me, who come from countries which have abolished the death penalty. The writing by Treadwell and Vernon, and the design of the book are very good. I strongly recommend reading "Last Suppers" - it is worth it.
