Cognoscenti : New York City
Published in Map by Cognoscenti (01 June, 2001)

This map was so good I almost didn't need to go to New York!
These Cognoscenti things have done to maps what cooking did to food. They are highly palatable (readable) and edible (don't make me dizzy). I used to get into auto accidents using giant maps that would cover the whole windshield while I tried to drive, so you can imagine how skeptical I was when my friend told me about Cognoscenti "Map" Guides. Turns out these things are so clear ANYONE can use them. With my Cognoscenti Map Guide in hand I felt like I could help people around New York! It truly made New York accesible to people like me. Thanks Cognoscenti Map Guides.

So Good I Almost Didn't Need to go to New York!
After causing several car accidents due to large fold-out maps covering my windhsield as I attempted to roar down interstates I was a tad skeptical when my friend Joey told me Cognoscenti Map Guides were the best guides he'd seen. I was used to large guide books which would weigh me down and take up space in my pack I could have used for skotch. But this guide has it all. Tons of info AND a slim and sleak design. Thank you COgnscenti!

Eye-pleasing, easy-to-use maps provide the skinny
Who are the people of Cognoscenti and how have they suddenly come to be making such wonderful map guides? It is as if they have plummed the depths of every wayfarer's knowledge of the great city and are out to tell all. I am an old man, wary of travel, easily confused, hesitant of adventure. But this guide has taken care of everything - well-labeled maps, distinctive descriptions of sites, a concise history of the area, suggestions for a memorable evening. Well worth it.

Colorado Campgrounds: The 100 Best and All the Rest

Colorado Campgrounds: The 100 Best and All the Rest
My wife and I have 3 young children and have recently started "car camping". This is one of the most complete Colorado campground books I have seen. The book is laid out so you can quickly select a geograhic area and review the campsites within that area. The beautiful photography gives you a sneek peak into where your'e headed. For those who like to camp at "non-KOA" type areas, this is a must have book.

Best I have seen for Colorado Camping Info
As the other reviews have noted, this is an outstanding book. While I can't say I have seen every other colorado campground book out there, I still feel comfortable saying you will have a hard time finding anything better. While there are many outstanding aspects to this book, one of the top highlights would be the full color photos of each of the top 100, while not always a complete representation of the campgrounds (ie, a view from/of one site can't do any campground justice) they are nice to get some idea of the place, and books with pictures are always nicer! The text includes very good and detailed info about each of the top 100 (includign facilities onsite and somtimes nearby, like where to find showers), and details of the other (non top 100) campgrounds are still fairly adequate. Again, I think if you are looking for a colorado campground book, this should be all you'll need.
My one and only suggestion for readers of this book would be to not take the "top 100" designation all that seriously. While I don't think you will be disappointed by any of the author's top 100 selection, just remember they are from his point of view and your ideas of what makes a top 100 might be different (I believe the author mentions this as well). There have been several occasions where I would have rated campgrounds in a certain area differently (ie of 4 campgrounds in an area, 1 made his top 100 and 3 others different, I would have picked a different one). From what I have noticed, the author seems to give priority to the campgrounds with the best views (which isn't a bad thing), but I would probably give more weight to those with the most privacy, but to each their own! So again, its a great book for info, you won't be disappointed, but just don't be afraid to try some others that didnt' make the top 100 cut, as on several occasions I have found them more appealing to me than a top 100 selection nearby.

Colorado Campgrounds
This is THE book if you are going camping in Colorado just once, or for the whole summer. Many guidebooks are out of date or are reprints of Forest Service information. This guy obviuosly VISITED these campgrounds. If your like a lot of us and barely have one or two weekends per summer to go camping, get this book. It will allow you to pick a new place without the risk of "trail and error".

Coming Clean
Published in Hardcover by Waterbrook Press (20 July, 1999)
Authors: Jorge Valdes, Ken Abraham, and Jorge Valdez
Average review score:

Riveting!!!
I too could not put this book down! It has an awesome and inspiring message of hope! This book needs to be read by the young people in America who are being lured into the false trap of materialism. Someone, somebody, please, please make a motion picture out of this story! I know three people who also have read this true story and they too could not put the book down! Read this book for yourself and let the testimony of Christ's transforming power of Jorge Valdes' Life inspire you too!

A compulsive memoir. Be prepared to lose a night's sleep!
When I saw this book on the shelf at my local library, I assumed this would just be some preachy, manipulative work in which a drug dealer tries to make his past vanish by finding God. As a lapsed Catholic I found this concept rather weak, but I picked up the book with a (reasonably) open mind, and started reading.
By the time he was in his twenties Jorge Valdes was a cocaine dealer on the rise, dealing to the rich and famous, the living embodiment of wealth and power and luxury; leading a life most of us can imagine only in our wildest dreams. The life of the rich with all the negative excess that goes with it: drugs, pornography, prostitution, infidelity, murder, double-crosses, torture, kidnapping. Enough drama and suspense for a Robert Ludlum novel. The only difference is, this is the real deal. But, as Valdes soon disovers there is a price to all this; and he finds the courage and committment to steer his life onto a new, positive path.
Reading this stirred my intense interest in the good and evil that all human beings are capable of, what Karl Jung called "the shadow". Obviously some of the content of this book is tough to take (Especially Valdes' graphic account of him and an associate being tortured by police for refusing to leak info), but the honesty with which Valdes tells his story and the glimpse the reader gets into his former life makes for fascinating and sometimes horrific reading.
Even though I gave up my religious faith long ago, I still found myself moved by Mr Valdes's committment to his beliefs and how dramatically his life has changed for the better because of his faith. COMING CLEAN is quite simply a remarkable story. I challenge anyone to read this book and finish it without feeling affected. A very moving and powerful work that could only have come from the pen of someone who has lived and breathed the life... and survived to help prevent others from making the same mistakes he did.

I Was Truly Touched
While going through a difficult time in my life, I happened upon this book. This story of redemption is so powerful that it actually deepened my faith. I thought, "If this person can be changed through faith, then so can I." Since reading Coming Clean I have become more reliant on my faith and much more aware of my choices. This book was not only a thriller of a read, but a story that has mattered on a much deeper level for me.

I would especially recommend this book for teens and college age readers who are under the constant assault of the immoral deadening messages of a society spun out of control with permissiveness and entitlement.

Covered with Glory : The 26th North Carolina Infantry at the Battle of Gettysburg
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (19 June, 2001)
Authors: Rod Gragg and Services Southern Comm
Average review score:

Loved it!
Full of superb research regarding the thoughts of the soldiers of this regiment, this book brings the men of the 26th North Carolina alive. It's description of their fighting at McPherson Ridge on the first day at Gettysburg is second to none. Also includes some history of the men after the war. Civil War enthusiasts will also like Gragg's book Confederate Goliath about the battle of Fort Fisher. I recommend both highly.

History that reads like a novel
I've been following Mr. Gragg's work since he wrote Confederate Goliath, The Battle for Fort Fisher. I remember talking to him at a Civil War show almost 8 years ago and he said he was writing a historical novel about the 26th North Carolina at Gettysburg. I have 3 ancestors who served with the Caldwell County companies of the 26th NC, and all I can say about this book is that I was so pleased with it the first time I read it, that I read it again. The portion of the book dealing with the 1st days battle against the tough Iron Brigade, and the 26th's young Colonel Henry King Burgwyn being shot down are almost surreal. Do yourself a favor, buy this book.

Fantastic and Moving
This book has brought even closer than before to the realization that men of the South, especically the 26th North Carolina, sacrificed so much for what they believed in. This book follows this unit from beginning to end, sharing all that they did during the War, but hilighting Gettysburg and the tremendous toll it took on this great unit. I was especially enthralled by the personal side that the author shared, delving into personal history of various members of the unit, especially its Boy Colonel. A great read for those who want to know more about the men and units who made up Lee's great Army.

Dear Dad: Letters from an Adult Child
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (December, 1989)
Author: Louie Anderson
Average review score:

This is a FABULOUS book.
Louie Anderson does a fantastic job of detailing the life of children growing up with alcololic parents. I have never read a more moving book, and cried in several places because of how great he painted the picture of life in his home. Everyone should read this book!!

A must read for anyone who has a father
I picked this book up in a library in college and couldn't put it down. Louie Anderson describes his relationship (or lack thereof) with his alcoholic, abusive father. The stories he relates are heart-wrenching and real. The book is a collection of letters Anderson wrote to his father after his father died. This book was of particular benefit to me after my own father died, though he was neither an alcoholic nor abusive. The book finishes with letters Anderson has received from readers that relate their stories of a need for resolution or closure with their own fathers. It's an easy read, dripping with painful irony (you'll laugh while you cry--I promise), and will help just about everyone gain a new appreciation for the impact fathers can have on children.

Brings Dysfuntion to a whole new light
I read this book because someone recommended it to me. I'm not an adult child of alcoholism. I'm and adult child of child molestation. This book really helped me deal with the pain of growing up "different." I recommend it to anyone who felt different growing up. I started writing letters to the person who I am most angry at and it's really helping me to become more comfortable with myself. Thank you Louie Anderson for bringing such a painful experience out in the open.

Disneyland the Nickel Tour: A Postcard Journey Through a Half Century of the Happiest Place on Earth
Published in Hardcover by Camphor Tree Pub (January, 2000)
Authors: Bruce Gordon, David Mumford, Roger Le Roque, and Nick Farago
Average review score:

An E-Ticket literary ride
The Nickel Tour is ostensibly a pictorial tour of Disneyland's history through a presentation of every postcard the Park has ever offered. However it is so much more. Written by Walt Disney Imagineers Bruce Gordon and David Mumford, the books gives fans a glimpse behind the scenes of both Disneyland and its development wing- Imagineering. Want to know when an attraction opened? It's in there. Want to know the history of that attraction? It's in there. How about "what might have been"? Yup, it's in there too. If you are fan of Disneyland, or just Disney, you will love this book. The writing is fantastic, the images wonderful, and the inside info is priceless.

BURSTING AT THE SEAMS!
If you're a fan of Disneyland and it's history, then this book is a must! I was astounded by the scope of this work, and the attention to detail. It covers Disneyland from it's beginnings in the early 50's to the present day with individual "stories" about the different aspects of the park. Accompaning these "stories" are hundreds of rare photos and artwork along with the postcards the book is named after. This is a definite must have book for fans of the California park.

The Finest Disneyland History In Print!
We're just glad this book is back in print for all to enjoy! With first editions now selling for over $200, it's great to see the 2nd edition just in time for Disneyland's 45th Anniversary. The story of Walt Disney and Disneyland is told through the history of Disneyland souvenir postcards from 1955 thru the present. Bruce Gordon and David Mumford are to be commended for this true labor of love. The book is jam packed with hundreds of color and black & white photos (as well as images of the original Disneyland postcards); and the accompanying text accurately tells the story of Walt Disney's creative vision for a new form of family entertainment. Beautifully bound and printed with quality materials. A fascinating read from cover to cover! Bravo!

Civil Warrior: Memoirs of a Civil Rights Attorney
Published in Paperback by Berkeley Hills Books (January, 2003)
Author: Guy T. Saperstein
Average review score:

A Must for Legal Professionals and Laypeople Alike!
Civil Warrior delivers an unusual glimpse in regards to tenacity, defense consciousness, and it's rewards both professionally and personally. Guy Saperstein gives you the key, and more, to information that is critical in understanding cognitive thinking. Peppered with humor and wit, his style is far from stuffy! This is an extremely enjoyable read. I recommend this book highly!

A true civil warrior!
Guy Saperstein has written a beautiful masterpiece with his latest book, "Civil Warrior: Memoirs of a Civil Rights Attorney." It's not often one finds a book of this caliber, so when one does locate such a book - it is a MUST read!!

The book exemplifies the glory of justice being served. Guy Saperstein not only shares his experiences in litigating important cases, ones which have made a profound impact on our society (such as the Denny's discrimination case and the State Farm Insurance case), but he also shares valuable lessons of life. The lessons he learned from his father and throughout his many experiences in life are ever so fundamental, yet they are the kinds of lessons in life that we all would do well to be reminded of.

An incredibly enjoyable and informative book!! This is a book no one can pass up!

Entertaining and Inspirational
Although Guy Saperstein probably wrote A CIVIL WARRIOR for a broad based audience, it is very worthwhile reading for attorneys, especially civil litigators. The book begins with a description of Guy Saperstein's childhood days in Southern California, continues with stories of his law school days and the beginnings of his public interest law career. Eventually, we learn of the historic employment discrimination cases he handled. The book is inspirational. Obviously, we are richer for the results Saperstein and and his colleagues obtained through the massive class action employment discrimination cases he launched. However, A CIVIL WARRIOR also gives encouragement and inspiration to the practicing attorney to go "the extra mile" for clients. Many practioners, I believe, would likely have settled much earlier in the various litigations in which Saperstein was involved. Saperstein's description of how his cases were screened, prepared and either tried or settled are completely engrossing.

The Dictionary of American Slang
Published in Hardcover by HarperResource (March, 1998)
Author: Robert L. Chapman
Average review score:

One Indispensible Reference
If you're into words, slang, and idioms like I am, then you probably already own a reference book like this and realize that you need at least 2-3 similar books to find the real nuances of meaning that you want.

This book definitely qualifies to be one of them. The definitions are thoughtful and precise, and there are significantly fewer 'disappointments' (at lousy or omitted definitions/terms) than with other books of it's kind.

Great reference for non-native American speakers
The book seems not as "eduactional" as other heritage or historical dictionaries proclaimed to be but it is really of great help to a non-native American speaker, like me, who from Taiwan to get indepth of American ways of life. Whenever I run across an expression in American movies or TV sit-coms, not very often I fail to get the satisfactory explanation with the detailed notes and usages. Therefore I picked up expressions such as: refrigerator mother, fag, net-sex, digital sex and so forth, that frequently used in American movie lines or even in real life but taken to be the "taboo words" in English-Chinese dictionary. Slangs have no any color of offensivenss but depends on how people use them. It is a pity for the international lanuages learners if they think the slang is not good enough to pick up. Once you have a command of slang, you will be really into lives of slang users

Probably the Best of Three Slang Dictionaries I Skimmed
In the library, I did a side-by-side comparison of this book (Chapman: Dictionary of American Slang, 3rd ed., 1995) with: (a) Spears, Richard: NTC's Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions, 3rd ed., 2000 and (b) Green, Jonathon: Cassell Dictionary of Slang, 1998. The advantages of this dictionary over the other two are: (1) some words and phrases are in this book but not the other two (e.g., "love bug," "love me, love my dog"); (2) it gives specific quotations and sources (e.g., "Had Feldstein deliberately low-balled the original numbers? - Newsweek"); (3) it indicates what sort of people originated or might use the word/phrase (e.g. "lot louse... [used in the] circus"); and (4) thorough cross-references are integrated into the body of the dictionary (e.g., "love, see CALF LOVE, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, PUPPY LOVE"). It has 617 pages and claims to have 19,000 entries, which is between the other two books. On the other hand, the Cassell Dictionary contains a large percentage of the entries in this book as well as many more entries, and it's the oldest of the three dictionaries. Still, if you had to buy only one of the three, this is probably the one to get.

As submitted to Hasting House on Dec. 10, 2001 via e-mail

One in a Hundred
My personal library collection of baseball books includes several hundred volumes. Only a privileged few of these books sit on a small shelf handy above my word processor. Among the selected few is a newcomer, The Complete Book of Baseball's Negro Leagues: The Other Half of Baseball History by John Holway. This unique book succinctly traces the history of Negro baseball from pre-civil war days to the end of the Negro Major League era in 1948.

Mr. Holway is no stranger to the more than 7,000 members of the Society for American Baseball Research. He has been chronicling Negro baseball history since 1969, and has produced five previous books on the topic. His innumerable newspaper and magazine articles are referenced in the book's laudable bibliography. Well indexed, this book is the culmination of over three decades of dedicated ressearch by the man who knows more about Negro baseball than any writer ever.
