Tough Trip Through Paradise
Published in Paperback by Comstock Book Distributors (December, 1988)
Author: Andrew Garcia
Average review score:

Squaw Kid
This is a fantastic book. It was interesting from beginning to end. It tells in realistic detail the life of Andrew Garcia in the wilderness, his life with Indians, and his life with his beloved In-who-lise. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about life in the wild, about life with Indians, and about the other side of the story of the tragedy of the American Indian. The episodes about a bear invading his camp and about the murder of John Hays were remarkable. This is one book I was sorry to see end.

The best account of the West in existence
An autobiography by a natural story teller. Its conviction and power will bring the reader closer to life in the wild west than anything else in any medium - a true american masterpeace, equal to Melville any day.

A Incredible Time Machine
Reading this book had a deep effect on my life. When it was first given to me I only had a vague idea about Montana. It was somewhere up there. I started reading it and it shocked me. The writing was not quite proper grammatically correct english you see, it irritated me so much that I stopped and put it away. But I had been hooked and I went back to it. This second time around I just could'nt put it down and wish it did'nt end. The dream of Montana became stuck in me.

In 1980 I had the good fortune to find my way to Bozeman and by an unimaginable stroke of luck I even met Ben Stein the editor of what had become my favorite book. Tough Trip Through Paradise is very much also the work of Ben Stein. Ben had gone through the original found writings to form the book. Andrew Garcia and Ben Stein are now gone. But the remains of the story are still here with us. The site of Fort Ellis just east of Bozeman has been excavated and located. The building where Walter Cooper outfitted Garcia is still here on Main Street. The Musselshell still flows. If you take a trip to the Big Hole Battlefield monument you'll see the markings of the battle. A photo of In-Who-Lise hangs in the museum but there's no connection made with the book.

Somehow Andrew Garcia and Ben Stein were able to conserve the essence of the 1870's and take us to that time. Not by telling us how it was but by making us feel it. This was their genius. It just seeps into you. Sit, read and just let yourself experience those times. The west as it was, the indians, and others who played their part will be changed forever in your mind because you will have been there.

They Call Me Coach
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 September, 1988)
Authors: John R. Wooden, Jack Tobin, and Denny Crum
Average review score:

A classic book about a classic coach.
When you have lost all of your faith in sports, buy and read this book. Coach Wooden takes us through the wonderful journey of his life, from a young boy growing up in a small Indiana town to the multiple national championships at UCLA. Its too bad there aren't more coaches like John Wooden, a truly inspiring individual

Coach Wooden
This book show the Wizard of Westwood's life and accomplishments in an interesting manner. I was surprised at how devoted he is to the Christian faith. The "Pyramid of Success" would be helpful for all of us. I have always been a UCLA fan because I lived in LA and I highly reccomend this book.

Great book for parents and coaches
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has ever coached kids in any sport at any level through college; or for parents of any kid playing any sport or for any college basketball fan. Wooden tells his philosophy and illustrates it with anecdotes, examples and stories from his life as a player and a coach. Inspirational for coaches and parents of players of any spor

Thirty Seconds over Tokyo

Authors: Ted W. Lawson, Peter B. Mersky, and Ellen R. Lawson

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo by Ted W. Lawson
To me the most interesting part of WWII was the battle for the Pacific Ocean. I had read many books about the Battle of Midway and Iwo Jima. They all told you about the war and the battles. The book Thirty Seconds over Tokyo tells you not only of the battles, but also the months of preperation for the surprise riad on Japan, it told you about the long month afterward in which the Chinese helped them recover and hide them from the Japanese. It tells of the crash landing on the Chinese coast and the horrible nights that followed, not knowing if they were going to turned over to the enemy or not. The book Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a great read for anyone who likes WWII becuase it not only tells of the battles, it gives the account of the emotional expenses a group of people were forced to go through. I liked this book and I hope you will too.

Thirty-Seconds Over Tokyo
This is one of the best books I have ever read and should be a must read for all history students. In addition to the historical importance of the Doolittle Raid, this book brings the reader a personal narrative of the event. If you are a fan of aviation or WWII history, then this is book is for you. I enjoyed it so much that I read it cover-to-cover, back-to-back! I haven't done that with a book in a long time.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a must read for all Americans!
Ted Lawson's account of the first bombing of Japan by American forces in World War II is a seat of your pants ride from cover to cover! This book is a firsthand account of the trials of an American hero. Ted Lawson leads his B-25 crew on its bombing mission, only to meet with danger and possible capture by the Japanese forces who hunted them. A great book and a fantastic account of the successful raid on Japan by Jimmy Doolittle's Raiders!

The Tightwad Gazette II: Promoting Thrift As a Viable Alternative Lifestyle
Published in Paperback by Villard Books (January, 1995)
Author: Amy Dacyczyn
Average review score:

GREAT BOOK FOR FOLKS OF ALL INCOME LEVELS
I would highly recommend this book and the other two Tightwad Gazette books. They are well worth the purchase price for anyone with a financial goal and not much money to meet it.

A book to read again and again.
As with _The Tightwad Gazette_, _The Tightwad Gazette II_ is a pleasure to read. Dacyzyn's folksy writing style and attractive graphics work together to create a book that readers will dip into again and again for pleasure and inspiration, as well as for practical advice and recipes. This book is a good buy for people who are new to thrift, for long-time tightwads looking for some new ideas, for environmentalists who want to reduce their use of resources, and for anyone who wants a simpler, more satisfying life, working toward their own dreams rather than merely keeping up with the Joneses. _The Tightwad Gazette II_ celebrates the frugal lifestyle, and its many ideas for creative use of one's resources will save the reader the book's purchase price many times over

An excellent investment
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would buy it for the same reason I would buy a dictionary: I keep referring back to it so much that if I had to go to the library I would use extra money for gasoline. If I had to go to the web for the same information, I would end up raising my electricity bill. It's more than the recipes and resources. It's more than the tips and techniques. The reason I love this book is because it's a source of encouragement. I don't feel powerless anymore over my money. I feel like I can choose what is important to me and what I should be spending money on. Not the other way around. That's really all tightwaddery is about and that is the whole point of this book.

If you really want to understand the philosophy side of tightwaddery, I recommend you search for the first volume of the Tightwad Gazette (which is out of print) or go ahead and buy the Complete Tightwad Gazette. It's a very good investment.

Turn Back Time
Published in Hardcover by Golden Anchor Press (11 March, 2000)
Authors: Lisa Kay Hauser and Philip Dale Smith
Average review score:

WOW! Where's Book # 2?
This is definitely one of those books that you don't lay down until you read the last word. It goes everywhere with you and your family wants you to hurry up and finish so they can have you back! It was a book that had me hooked from the beginning. It reminded me of the old mining stories my family use to reminisce about. The detailed info about the mining terminology was very interesting. Do you remember the Little House on the Prairie shows? It made me think of that time period. The characters in the book were so realistic and believable. When I read books like this with so much detail, they make me feel a part of the script. They also make me regret getting to the last page. This book was great and once I finished reading it, it was on my mind for days. It's nice to be able to find enjoyment and comfort in a book like this when you need an escape from the everyday happenings of the world. Grab this book and escape for a few hours! Very enjoyable, where's #2!?! Keep up the fantastic work Lisa and Dale! I love Dale's childrens books, they are great, too.

Turn back Time, a GREAT book!
This is one of those books that I will read more than once. I love the characters and the plot and the all around feeling this book gives. I am certain that I will read Turn back Time to my children and be excited to explain the history to them. I definitely cant wait for the next one.

Great Book for All Ages or Gender
My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed reading "Turn Back Time" and we have passed the book on to my mother to read and our daughters. The only bad part was when I got to the end and ran out of book but didn't want it to end. The story about this delightful family is so interesting that we can't wait for the sequel to come out.

The Undaunted Garden: Planting for Weather-Resilient Beauty
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (June, 2003)
Author: Lauren Springer
Average review score:

Gorgeous photography, engaging, straight forward text.
For those of us who live in the western states, this book is an invaluable rescource. Ms. Sprenger offers great advice on learning how to cope with poor soil conditions (such as sand and clay), how to acheive a lushly planted look by relying on hearty (yet beautiful) native plants that won't let you down when the going gets tough, and absolutely wonderful planting designs and combinations. Her style is engaging and entertaining to read, as well as forthright and full of plenty of personal anecdotes and tidbits. Her photogrophy alone is worth the price of the book. Even if you don't live with poor soil, nasty weather and a stunted growing season, there's much to learn here. A great book, one of my favorites! A destined 'green' classic.

Plant Choices for Tough Garden Sites
As a landscape designer, I have found Lauren's book 'The Undaunted Garden : Planting for Weather-Resilient Beauty' to be as important a tool as pruners, shovels and trowels.

By dividing plant lists into groups that agree with every kind of climate around a building, I can quickly go 'there' and select just the right plant(s). Then I can fantasize about and enrich my knowledge of others. The listing of not-well-known natives and adapted plants is breathtaking and should spur the nursery trade into a production frenzy. I especially love the color and textural combinations pictured. The photography of these plant alliances is so delicious that I get hungry for dirt under my nails just by looking at the cover! Imagine how it helps the novice gardener create a great garden with fewer mistakes.

If you live in the Rocky Mountains, The Undaunted Garden is a must. If you live on a prairie, even better. It's also a gift that I'm going to send my Dad now that he's planting his own Xeriscape.

Well written, beautifully illustrated
If you love to garden, but are nowhere near a coast, this is the book for you. Lauren Springer gardens in Colorado and understands the harsh mid-continental climate and its challanges to gardeners trying to create beautiful, yet durable landscapes. The book is divided into sections addressing both plant types (e.g. annuals, perennials, roses, etc.) and site conditions (e.g. hot & dry, shady). Numerous color photographs are throughout the book and a section in the back highlights a goodly number of what she considers excellent plants for harsh climate gardens. The only drawback to this book is that she recommends many plants which are difficult to locate commercially. It speaks well of her writing abilities that this reader, at least, has gone to great lengths to locate several of her recommendations, as I could not face another summer without them

Wealth Protection : Build and Preserve Your Financial Fortress
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (October, 2002)
Authors: Christopher R. Jarvis and David B. Mandell
Average review score:

Nice Outline But VERY LIGHT On Detail!!!!
This book will be good if you want to review the components that might make up your wealth protection strategy. However, the book comes up short on the detail needed to understand those components well or to structure a comprehensive plan for yourself.

To get a feel for the lack of detail take a look at the Table of Contents, note that it seems very comprehensive but when you look a little closer you will see that most of the chapters are LESS THAN 5 PAGES! The subtopics in each chapter usually make up a single paragraph with a large font bold heading that takes up a lot of the page.

In short, if you want to get an overview of the components you might ask your advisor to explain to you, this would be a valuable purchase. If you want to understand these things yourself, you will be disappointed.

Great advice, for just about everybody
I just finished reading Wealth Protection and found it to be extremely valuable in planning for my financial future. I am a business consultant and consider myself to fairly aware of the various financial tools, strategies, and techniques...

However, the book offered me numerous new strategies for more effectively protecting my wealth. The best thing about the book is that it is structured in a way that will allow just about anybody to find specific, tailored advice.

Good work Jarvis and Mandell! I look forward to your next book!

key reading for safeguarding your money
i am privy to working with Chris personally and I can assure you he is one of the most respected, capable and knowledgeable persons in the area of wealth protection. the book's true magic lies in the fact that it is intended for anyone interested in protecting their assets, and it shows you how to do it in a very down to earth, easy to understand manner.

this is not designed for the technically advanced financiers out there, so don't fret. it is literally for anyone who wants to protect their wealth.
a highly recommended book.

Wharton on Dynamic Competitive Strategy
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (May, 1997)
Authors: George S. Day and David J. Reibstein
Average review score:

A well-chosen set of essays
A well-chosen set of essays is compiled, based on a 4-level framework: i)Analyze the competitive environment, ii)Anticipate competitor's actions & reactions, iii) Formulate Dynamic Strategies, iv) Choose among alternative strategies. The book provides a great way to update one's strategy knowledge.
But I find 'Mastering Strategy: The Complete MBA Companion in Strategy' by Financial Times Editors to be a better book with greater depth and broader spectrum.

A Must Read for Business Leaders and Consultants
This book is wonderful. Unlike many business books which take one very simple concept and drive it into the ground over 400 pages, Wharton on Dynamic Competitive Strategy has several (17) discrete topics which are interlinked through common themes. Need to understand applications of game theory to strategy formulation? Want to understand how to structure scenario analysis for a working session with a group of business unit directors? This book will help you understand some very academic concepts with very real, material impact when used properly.

This is also a great book for MBA students who want to understand a topic before taking to a whole class.

One final point, the caliber of the authors is incredible. Each author is writing about his/her specific areas of expertise, and the topics are extremely timely.

These are my opinions alone and not necessarily those of my employer.

Essential strategy handbook
This book is amazingly well written and goes from the basics of strategy to more complex subjects such as game theory. But the best of it is not the wide variety of strategy subjects or the amount of real world examples it uses but the integration between chapters. One can easily read this book at once or skip to chapters that are more interesting to him/her.

I consider this book essential for MBA students, management consultants and managers in general. Excellent choice!

There Goes the Bride: Making Up Your Mind, Calling it Off and Moving On
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (31 March, 2003)
Authors: Rachel Safier and Wendy Roberts
Average review score:

Cuts to the heart of the matter.
I bought this book when I was seriously questioning my relationship and considering breaking off my engagement. Thank to the courage of Rachel Safier and the other women who shared their experiences, private pain, and strength, I found the answer in my heart and made my decision. Sharing the experiences of so many women helped me to feel more confident in my decision, and it helped immensely to know that I was not alone in what I was going through. The friendly, supportive, no-nonsense tone makes you feel like you are having coffee with a group of close friends. This book truly empowers women to ask the hard questions and face the truth. Excellent!

There goes the bride
Truly an amazing book!! I recommend that anyone who has gone through a break-up, divorce or broken engagment read this book! It is extremely responsible in it's attention to detail and the many stages of trauma one goes through in a situation like this. Rachel also gives many examples of what other almost-brides wrote in their surveys to her and it is so helpful to hear such a varied opinion of others' experiences. Please, if you are going through any type of break-up or relationship trauma - READ THIS BOOK!

Wish I had read this months ago!
I cancelled my wedding 2 months ago and received this book the day before my planned wedding date. I read many of the other books that were out there (trying to find answers) and none reinforced so many of my feelings. My fiance and I were not right for each other and we were rushing in marriage. I am so happy to be free from that relationship and this book is a gem for women strugling to understand their 'cold feet' and their recurring doubts about marrying their fiances. I highly recommend it and hope all women who have doubts read this and find strength in the accounts of other women who have been there.

What It Takes To Be Number #1: Vince Lombardi on Leadership
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (13 December, 2000)
Author: Vince, Jr. Lombardi
Average review score:

Self-knowledge, Character, and Integrity
I highly recommend this book if you are interested in any aspect of management or leadership or if you are looking for ways to refine your character and increase your personal and interpersonal effectiveness.

Vince Lombardi is arguably the greatest professional football coach of all time. His 10 year coaching record was 105 wins, 35 losses, and 6 ties. His legendary Green Bay Packers played in 6 World Championship games and won 5, including the first two Super Bowls, and his post-season record of 9 wins and 1 loss is unmatched. Today, the name "Lombardi" conjures up many images in the minds of those who knew the man, knew of the man, or have heard the many myths and legends about the man. Who better to tell and analyze Vince Lombardi's story than his son, Vince Jr.?

This book not only presents a balanced view of Vince Lombardi the man and coach, it also gives readers the "Lombardi Leadership Model" (self-knowledge + character + integrity = leadership) and other useful tools and insights for introspection and personal leadership development. Besides being a great biographical account of a very complex, often misunderstood, and highly successful leader in a public and highly competitive environment, this book is also a great guide to personal growth for any leader in today's chaotic environment and tomorrow's uncertain future.

A Legendary Leader Lives On
In this book, Vince Lombardi, Jr., masterfully connects the leadership principles of his father with the leadership demands of the 21st century. Vince, Jr. demonstrates his unique qualification to piece together core leadership qualities of Coach Lombardi in a coherent, engaging and personable style. I had always heard about the many speechs Vince Lombardi gave toward the end of his life. Vince Jr. brings "The Speech" to life through his personal and expert analysis. Although the book contains great leadership principles and theory, it goes beyond being a text book on leadership. "What it Takes To Be #1" offers personal reflections from Coach Lombardi and those who knew him best, particularly his son, on what it means to be a leader. As the director of a leadership institute for a 6,000 employee organization, I look forward to using many of Lombardi's principles in our organizational development program. I particularly appreciate Lombardi's emphasis on self-discovery and self-knowledge, the building blocks of character and integrity. In Lombardi's own words, these elements "provide the foundation of leadership." Who better to reconnect today's 21st century leaders with a legend from decades ago? Vince Jr. achieves that connection in this book. No one should be surprised: this book is a winner!

This Book Could Change Your Life
Above the portals of Apollo's temple at Delphi one could find the words "Know Thyself". This injunction, as old as civilization, is the departure point for this thoughtful volume. Vince Lombardi Jr. has penned a gem of a book, a labor of love based upon the philosophies and actions of his famous father. It's about winning - through knowing yourself, building excellent character, and living with integrity. Vincent T. Lombardi is an icon. Living in Green Bay, I am reminded daily of his legacy. But this isn't just another rehashing of the Packer "glory days". Vince Jr. has applied his father's winning strategies to life, to leadership, to motivation, to building teamwork and developing winning organizations. On a personal level, the reader can apply the principles laid out in this book to developing a winning attitude, to asking the right questions to making better life decisions, to developing better focus and discipline, and to discovering your life's passion and jumping into it with enthusiasm. This is a fantastic book for students, for those trying to earn leadership positions, for successful business people looking to enhance the performance of their company, or for any intelligent person trying to improve their life and find their true way. My favorite thought from this book is "Chase perfection and settle for excellence along the way." Vince Lombardi's book will definitely get you chasing perfection, and make you want to RUN TO WIN!
