Gold Buckle Dreams: The Rodeo Life of Chris Ledoux.

Gold Buckle Dreams
I am not a fan of bull riders in the least. But when given this book, I couldn't put it down! This is a must read for anyone and everyone. Not only is it a great depiction of the life of Chis LeDoux, but shows all readers what a passion for something can help you accomplish. Every moment in this book, made me want to get off my butt and do something with my life too. I credit Chris LeDoux for all his efforts and the author for a wonderful book put into print. There is no way my words can come close to letting you know the emotion and triumph involved in this book. All I can really say is READ IT!

CHRIS LEDOUX IS SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
EVERYONE MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! THERE IS NO OTHER BOOK LIKE GOLD BUCKLE DREAMS!!! YOU MUST ALSO GET ALL OF HIS CD'S BECAUSE HIS MUSIC IS LIKE NO OTHER SINGER'S. I LOVE LEDOUX!!!!!!!!

If you are a Chris LeDoux fan, this is a "must read!"
This book is by David Brown as told to him by Chris LeDoux. It starts when Chris was a child learning to ride horses and living in Texas, later moving to Cheyenne as a teenager, and follows his life through attainment of his dream of becoming a World Champion bareback bronc rider. It was written before he became world famous for his musical talent but describes the beginnings of his musical career as well. Chris describes one special memory of standing in the empty, quiet arena at Cheyenne Frontier Park as a teenager dreaming of being able to ride in the Frontier Days Rodeo. I can just feel the emptiness of the big arena and hear the Wyoming wind whistling through it. When Chris performs in Cheyenne, it is always very special to him. With all that Chris has attained since this book was written, there is definitely a need for a sequel. I don't think Chris ever even dreamed he would be a World Champion western singer too

The Grit Cookbook: World-Wise, Down-Home Recipes
Published in Paperback by Hill Street Press (October, 2001)
Authors: Jessica Greene and Ted Hafer

Get it before it sells out!!!!
This is one of *the* best cookbooks I own and probably the only one that is actually vegetarian. Here in Athens, it was highly coveted and it's first press run sold out unbelievably fast! When it was rumored that another retailer in Athens was going to carry the book before it hit amazon.com I called that place every 30 min to see if the book had arrived. When the shipment came it, I bought 4, and made 3 people very happy for Christmas -of course we had to keep one for ourselves!

This book features great great vegetarian food. The food is not weird or strange and it will even delight non-vegetarians. We love all the food in this cookbook and can't wait to start cooking. Many of their "secret recipes" are in this book including their famous yeast gravy!

The book is organized great and has awesome recipes. The book includes a bit too many quotes from local Athenians/townies and out of town bands to describe how the great The Grit and its food is-- but for those of you that are too far away to experience going to the Grit for a sit down meal, the quotes will give you a taste of what our town is like and how much we all love the Grit!

We can't wait to flip through the book and pick out what we will plan for dinner including sides and desserts! Buy this book and you will be the envy of all your friends and your belly will be soooo happy!

-Bethie and Brian
"townies"

Excellent even for non-veggies
I received this cookbook as a Christmas present from friends who are residents of Athens. I have only eaten at The Grit once, and so I am far from being an expert on their menu, and I didn't have any "favorites" that I was compelled to try first. So I opened it up and attempted the first recipe that caught my eye, the Cinnamon Raisin-Craisin Bread. Oh baby.... this is the good stuff. The recipe was well written and easy to follow, and the resulting bread was out of this world.

This was just the first of many. All of the recipes I have tried have been great, especially the brunch dishes and cakes, and I haven't missed the meat one bit. Bravo, and thanks to my friend for sending it since I never would have known about this gem without her!

A little piece of (The) Grit
When I finished graduate school and left Athens, GA the thing I missed the most was eating at The Grit. It is probably my favorite restaurant, and I have eaten at a lot of places around the country. Every time I ate there I wished that there was a cookbook with their recipes (especially my favorite -- The Golden Bowl). Now there is one (yea!) and although we have had the cookbook for only a short time we have made nearly half the recipes -- and have yet to find one that we would not make again.

Most recipes are quite simple and all are good. I was somewhat surprised (although delighted) that they published some of their most popular dishes and excellent desserts. Although this does not replace the experience of actually eating at The Grit, it is as close as I can come without a trip to Athens.

George Preddy : Top Mustang Ace
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (25 August, 1991)
Authors: Joe Noah, Jr., Samuel L. Sox, Joseph W. Noah, and Samuel L. Sox
Average review score:

An outstanding book about a man with whom I shared the sky.
I knew George 'Ratsy' Preddy as a fellow-pilot in the 352nd Fighter Group--the Bluenosers. I saw him at briefings and in action, and quickly developed a tremendous respect for him as a dedicated pilot--calm on the ground, aggressive in the air. This book by Joe Noah and Sam Sox is not only a marvelous tribute to his courage and combat achievements, but a mirror of an outstanding person. He inspired those who flew with him. This book brought back many memories. As Editor/Historian of he 352nd FG Association, I recommend it highly.

A comprehensive biography of one of America's best
George Preddy is best known for two things: being the highest scoring Mustang ace and being killed in a tragic friendly fire incident on Christmas Day 1944. Much of what has been written about Preddy in the history books has been a re-hash of some commonly known information. However,'Top Mustang Ace' tells the full story. Though Joe Noah is George Preddy's cousin, he is an unbiased and dedicated historian. Many of the over 100 photos in the book have never been published before, including rare gun camera footage. The authors have done a thorough job; they interviewed many of Preddy's squadronmates and family, used official combat reports and even Preddy's diary entries to paint a portrait of the man behind the legend. Any WWII aviation buff would be impressed by the amount of work that went into this book.

An outstanding biography of an aviation hero
This is an interesting story of a young man in World War II. It is detailed and well researched. General John C. Meyer is quoted as saying: "George Preddy was the greatest fighter pilot who ever squinted through a gunsight; he was the complete fighter pilot". The book is also an accounting of the man himself (apart from his war efforts) and his family. It is written by a man who knew George Preddy as a child and looked up to him.

The Great New England Sea Serpent: An Account of Unknown Creatures Sighted by Many Respectable Persons Between 1638 and the Present Day
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (August, 1999)
Author: J. P. O'Neill
Average review score:

One of the best of its kind
June O'Neill has pulled off the very difficult feat of writing a book on a cryptozoological subject and making that book balanced, readable, and highly entertaining. This thoroughly researched examination of the New England "sea serpent" story - not just the celebrated events of 1817, but all sightings, from Colonial times through the present day - is enough to make even the most hardened skeptic gaze out to sea and ponder whether we may have overlooked a spectacular discovery. O'Neill doesn't try to argue the case for a large, unknown animal. She lets the witnesses speak for her and lets the reader draw the conclusions. Bottom line: This is a marvelous book. No one with an interest in marine life, cryptozoology, or the magic and mystery of the oceans should pass it by.

"Challenges the superlatives"
J.P. O'Neill's destined to become a classic work, "THE GREAT NEW ENGLAND SEA SERPENT...." is truly in a class of its own in terms of mass appeal. From the carefree sunbather on the shores of the Cape to the tenured cryptozoologist this book is an immediately engaging, thoroughly researched, and fascinating work. HIGHLY recommended!

Amazing!!
Before I had read this book I had no idea who or what the New England Sea Serpent was. This book got me intersted and I found it amazing that something that large and mythical could actually be living at the bottom of the ocean. The way the book is written is so good and whole that it makes you want to read more and more. I recommend this book to absolutely anyone.

Fortune Favors the Bold: A British Lrrp With the 101st
Published in Paperback by Ivy Books (May, 1998)
Authors: James W. Walker and Dan McIsaac
Average review score:

A book that affected another Limey - a masterpiece
James W Walker presents you with the story of his time in Vietnam and allows you to be transported there as if you were watching yourself.

He starts the story by describing how he managed to get to the States - via Hull, UK and through various schools in the area before moving with his mother to the USA, volunteering for the Army and shipping out to Vietnam.

Walker's description of his time in Nam is written so clearly that he betrays the fact that so many years have passed between the Tour and the book. His writing is not in the style of a list - like so many other books in this genre - but of a well-structured novel by a clearly talented author.

Fortune Favours the Bold - Walker was certainly bold. A number of tales in this book must have taken sheer courage to undertake. But Walker does not flaunt this - there is no ostentatious hint that he was the best, nor did he even think he was anything other than an average young man.

The book has, as all Nam books do, a fistful of photos taken of the author and his friends. The dipped head of Walker in one of the photos underlines my earlier statement - Walker is a real person. One with whom you can associate and befriend.

Being British myself it could be understood that out of the endless Vietnam books I have read this one would stay in my mind more than others, but Walker has a style that allows you to become him, to understand him and to like him. I would recommend anyone to read this book, regardless whether they are interested in Vietnam, war, fear and courage or not because it is a good read that will transport you from noon to night as you glide through the book, living your own war. I think you should buy this book - you will read it, love it and recommend it to your friends.

Mr Walker, Sir, when will you bless us with another book?

An outstanding story that you will never forget!
Limey's account as a 101st Airborne LRRP in Vietnam will keep you riveted to your seat and you immediatly feel yourself being transported to the action! Fortune Favors the Bold is extraordinary. Step into the lives of tough, rugged, professionals who performed their jobs well and with pride, under extremely difficult conditions. One you start this book, be prepared - you can't put it down!

A real story, by a real man, telling it like it really was.
Do you think that life in Lurps was all guts and gore and glory?

If so, you're wrong. If you're looking for a book about these things, look elsewhere. If you want to know what Lurping was REALLY like, read this book. It tells it like it was, warts and all. As you read it, you'll meet a gamut of emotions. You'll laugh, and you'll cry; you'll be angry and you'll be frustrated.

Just like Limey Walker and the men who made up the famous recon unit of the 1st Brigade/101st Airborne Division in Vietnam: LRRP--Long Range Reconaissance Patrol, The Foul Dudes, The Eyes of the Eagle.

This is the story of the life of an unusual man, one who was a hero, but not the Audey Murphy type.

The Limey was born in Britain and spent the first two decades of his life looking for something truly meaningful. His search took him 3 continents to come to an end. He found what he was looking for when he wound up in Lurps, in Vietnam, the only subject of Her Majesty, the Queen of England, to serve with the Foul Dudes.

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD is the story of his search, and the record of what he found at its end. It tells how he grew from a child into a man, and then grew as a man. It tells of his mistakes and the trouble he got into along the way. It tells of the remarkable men he served with, in great honor.

It's a Lurp's-eye view of one phase of the War in Vietnam, in the rear, and on the line as a member of a 6 man recon team creepy-crawling in Mr. Charles' backyard.

It's the story of a common man who joined with others like himself, and together created created an uncommon legend of uncommon courage, valor and gallantry that was acknowledged even by the enemy, who feared them more than a B52 raid.

This made them--and him--a shining part of the history of a war without luster.

Read it, and learn what Lurps was really like. And learn what the Limey was really like at the same time--a very brave man with a big heart, who epitomized a "Band of Brothers" who never let their friends down, nor failed to do their duty.

If LRRP history interests you--read FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. If courage interests you--read it. If men who put honor first interest you--read it. If you just want a good read--read it.

The Limey's book has them all, and is worth the effort. It's plain and unvarnished truth, told by a heck of a soldier, and told very well indeed.

It's a keeper.

The Grunt Padre
Published in Paperback by CMJ Marian Publishers (01 June, 2000)
Authors: Father Daniel Mode and Daniel Mode
Average review score:

A Saintly Priest
The spiritually inspirational story of Father Vincent R. Capodanno has deeply touched myself, my family and my friends. Both of my parents served in the Navy during the Vietnam Era; my mother as a nurse and my father as an aviator. I passed the book on to them and it brought tears to my mother's eyes each time she picked it up. The autor, Fr. Daniel Mode simply portays a vivid picture of Father Capodanno's childhood, minissonary work, and especially his deep understanding of the spiritual and physical needs of his fellow "grunts". The troops leaned on him so that they could go forward in the daily struggles of war. It was obvious that Fr. Mode had a deep connection with his subject. The countless personal interviews with the men who served with Fr. Capodanno as a missionary and later as a chaplin, as well as the troops who were in country with him bring the book to life. It was obvious how the title of Father Mode's book came to be. He writes of Father Capodanno's committment to God through his selfless sacrafice in ministering to the people he encountered in his missionary work and in Vietnam. Thank you Father Mode for writing this beautiful story!

Vincent R. Capodanno: Courage of a Lion, Faith of a Martyr
This is a "can't put it down" biographical story about a Catholic priest known as Father Vincent Robert Capodanno who served in the Viet Nam War. From a war that many would like to forget emerges an identifyable hero and quite probably a great saint. Fr. Daniel Mode does an excellent job in researching the life and career of this courageous officer who was described by one of the grunts who knew Capodanno as "a man who had the courage of a lion and the faith of a martyr." He died serving the "grunts" on the battlefield, minstering to them at the hour of their death. It is a well-documented account of Capodanno's childhood, manhood and priesthood and a tribute to the men who served with him. A great book for everyone, a missing piece of history that finally has come to light. Enjoy!

A story of a true hero
This is an interesting story which has been well researched by the author. We need more true stories of everyday people who have done great things to find their way in to the many media outlets that are over-enamored with the personal lives of actors, professional athletes, and pop singers.

Thanks to Fr. Mode, I and others have learned about this Priest who served his God and his country well in the ugly war that was Vietnam.

Harry Truman and the Human Family
Published in Paperback by Capra Press (October, 1998)
Author: Frank K. Kelly

Frank Kelly's Vision
Too often the political process is something that takes place far outside our own lives, which is why voters tend to be either emotional partisans of their celebrity heroes or apathetic or cynical. Frank Kelly's understanding of one very human and accessible man, Harry Truman, made me rethink what the American Presidency is about. By interweaving his own lifestory with the Truman presidency, Kelly creates an absorbing drama into which we are all swept. He sees politics not as a game, but as the means to realizing a nation's highest potential. Yes, he is an idealist, but we have too few of those. Kelly's vision of one president and his world-changing decisions is transferable to every presidency. As we prepare to elect a new man to that office, there's no more appropriate reading for us than Kelly's book.

Truman and the Human Fanily
Here is a most readable and interesting first-hand account and association with one of America's great presidents. Frank Kelly's book reveals the integrity and strong character of this man. As one of his speech writers, he had personal contacts with Truman and tells much about his life which could only be told from the intimate contacts he had with the President. He participated in the day to day presidential campaign which led to one of the most surprising and stunning victories any president ever had.

Kelly served as an assistant to the majority leader of the senate in 1949 and the early fifties and brings an accurate and authentic character study of Truman from inside the political realm. If you want to know close-up about this remarkable and able president from someone who was there, this book tells it all.

Hollywood Bad Boys : Loud, Fast, and Out of Control
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (10 June, 2002)
Author: James Robert Parish
Average review score:

"HOLLYWOOD BAD BOYS" ¿ A (VERY) GOOD READ
Everything you always wanted to know about bad behavior -but were too afraid to ask (or didn't know where to find it). Well, here it is! Spent all weekend reading Parish's lively tome about the Silver Screen's most famous rogues - from scoundrels to rascals - & truly, couldn't put the book down. In just under 300 fascinating pages, found out WHO did WHAT to WHOM. What's more, the author tells you HOW and WHY. A phenomenally fun read, and highly recommended.

A must buy
What is good about this book is that it not only covers the familiar bad boys like Bogart and Mitchum but also such lesser known but nonetheless fascinating men like Tom Neal and Lawrence Tierney. And it covers the entire history of Hollywood from Wallace Reid of the silent era to Robert Blake who is in today's headlines. Anyone who knows Parish's books will want this one. And anyone who doesn't better start.

Getting Past the Tabloids
This is a fascinating look at Hollywood history. Bad behavior is as old Hollywood and bad boys go back to the earliest days. But this is not a simple recap of tabloid stories; this is an indepth look the backgrounds and careers of these bad boys. It also traces the consequences of this bad behavior. The book could also serve as a cautionary tale; much of this bad behavior is the result of booze and/or drugs and in many cases derailed or completely destroyed promising careers. I recommend this highly interesting book.

Gideon's Trumpet
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (February, 1989)
Author: Anthony Lewis
Average review score:

The Road to the Supreme Court
Gideon's Trumpet is a marvelous true story of how a poor man new in his heart his rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and fought for those rights, by himself from prison. It recounts the incredible events surrounding the landmark Supreme Court case of Gideon v. Wainwright. While beautifully describing the uphill battle that Clarence Earl Gideon faced, the author enlightens the viewer with the essential roles of the different branches of government and of the basic but crucial processes that they endure. A great book for anyone who has had any interest in the law or government. A must for law students.

An Excellent Piece of Legal History
As Lewis documents the events surrounding the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, perhaps the most important case of the Warren Court era, he provides us with an easy-to-read yet insightful look at the workings of the Supreme Court and the interaction, and sometimes tension, between the federal and state courts. Lewis also provides a thoughtful commentary on the legitimacy of rules that issue from the courts as opposed to those that issue from our legislatures and in doing so, he provides his reader with a perspective of the Court's role in our democracy. This book made everything I learned in law school all the more clear. It is a wonderful explanation of American criminal and constitutional law for those who have legal training and for those who do not. Both readers will find Gideon's Trumpet accessible but also intellectually challenging.

A Classic, Essential Reading For All Law Students
Gideon's Trumpet is an eloquent and informative look at a very important story in the history of the United States legal system. Not only will it teach you about the evolution of the right to counsel from the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, but it teaches you much about the practices, intricacies and eccentricities of the Supreme Court and its members. This book should be considered essential and required reading for all law students. I loved it and learned much from it.
