American Accent Training: A Guide to Speaking and Pronouncing American English for Anyone Who Speaks English As a Second Language

Unique method to make your American accent sound `real'
(CORRECTION TO VERSION 1) LINE 1: `FOUR' NOT FOR WEEK

After I had completed a four week seminar at the Euro Center Language School in Alexandria, Virginia, my teachers gave me the best training marks a student ever got there: four `10's. Nevertheless, American native speakers were still able to detect my German accent in my English. Then I found Ann Cook's AAT in a book store in Washington D.C. I started an intense training. Recently I attended an English class in Munich, Germany, where I live. The teacher, an American from New York, wanted me to leave the class room because she thought I was an American who wanted to pull her leg by coming to her class. By the way, it's never too late to start with AAT: I'm 60 years of age. Anybody can do it if he or she tries hard.

Babyface: A Story of Heart and Bones
Published in Hardcover by Woodbine House (October, 2000)
Authors: Jeanne McDermott and Nancy Burson
Average review score:

BABYFACE - A Witness
BABYFACE by Jeanne McDermott is a witness to the healing power of love. It is a true story of how people of all ages grow to meet unexpected challenges. Although in this case the challenges arise from the birth of a child with a rare cranialfacial disorder, anyone with the experience of having children and creating a new family constellation will identify with many of the issues that face Jeanne McDermott and her family.

There is nothing superficial about BABYFACE and it reveals no easy answers. Instead, the reader shares a truly three-dimensional experience where the word "miracle" regains its stark significance and a "mystical vision" expands our world.

BABYFACE is a book for anyone with a family, at either end of the generational see-saw, and it will not leave you untouched.

From one mom to others
I write as the mother of a child with Crouzon Syndrome, which, as the last footnote of this wonderful book will tell you, is "allelic" with Apert's. My daughter Gwendolyn Fyfe was born around the time that Nathaniel Finch was, and it is eerie how similar our experiences were. (We are even Quakers!) I recommend that parents of children with craniofacial syndromes read this book and reread it, prepared to relive and reflect on your own experiences. Warning: this could be painful, and you should probably put some time between the searing experiences of ICUs and operations before you examine your emotions and beliefs by reading this book. "Facing" the situation has given our family a strength and insight into what is really important in this life which we might not otherwise have had. It is clear that it did the same for Jeanne McDermott, and this beautiful book shows how. Parents of children with craniofacial conditions: let's start an on-line book club to discuss it!

ELOQUENT!!!
I love this book. My 2 1/2 year old son went through four surgeries in his life time and I can so relate to the recall of ICU's and operating rooms. My son also has a form of dwarfism and will be different. I love her philosophy, so much peace and forgiveness to stranger's rudeness! She has so eloguently speak of the growth that any parent of child with differences have experienced. Babyface will be kept close to my heart forever and I recommend this book to all parents who are struggling with the challenge of bring up a child with a difference. In time, you too will gather the strength and peace demonstrated so well and articulated by Ms. McDermott.

"Baseball Letters" -- Historical, Magical, & Awe-inspiring!
Recently, I came across a fabulous book and decided to share my thoughts about this "grand slam" with fellow sports fans! Incidentally, it's the perfect gift for any sports fan, any age, any gender, any time -- especially for the holidays! The book is called "Baseball Letters - A Fan's Correspondence With His Heroes" by Seth Swirsky (Kodansha, NY) and it contains about 100 letters that the author wrote to famous (and some not so famous) baseball players (Cal Ripkin, Jr., Ted Williams, etc..) and the truly fascinating, incredible responses that the players sent back. I'm 33 years old, I've been a baseball fan for years, and I just loved this book. I know there are other sports fans out there who would enjoy and appreciate it, as well. Every book store in America should display "Baseball Letters" so every "fan" can get a hold of this gem! Baseball is the national pastime and I'm sure "Baseball Letters" will be, too. Check it out and enjoy the magic! E.Hayden :)

All-Time Favorites
I bought Mr. Swirsky's new book "Every Pitcher Tells A Story" and was so taken by its originality that I bought his first one "Baseball Letters". They are quite different and it's hard to tell which one I enjoyed more. I was glad he didn't write to the same players--every letter was a new 'experience'.Great reads.

A magical, historical, and awe-inspiring book!

Bobby Sherman : Still Remembering You
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (April, 2000)
Authors: Bobby Sherman and Dena Hill
Average review score:

For all Bobby Sherman Lovers...past and present!
If you have ever loved Bobby Sherman, you have to read this book! Great insights into his life, personally, and professionally. Throughout the whole thing, I kept trying to figure out how old I was when he was going through a particular experience , and what my personal opinion was at the time in terms of the stories he tells about his life, such as, how I felt seeing him on Here Comes The Brides, or the first time I heard a hit song of his, or when I heard he got married, etc. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane, and makes me love him now even more than I did as a kid because he has really made something of his life beyond stardom in terms of his work with the L.A. Police Department.I think you'll enjoy reading it. I know I sure did! And it makes a great gift for a Bobby Sherman fan in your life.

One of the best books I've ever read about Bobby Sherman
This book was one of the very few that I couldn't put down until I finished reading it. It answered many of the questions that I had through the years of being a Bobby fan that no one else could've answered for me. Thank You Bobby and Dena for the wonderful look into your life, good times as well as bad. I've come to realize that this wonderful man that I had such a huge crush on many years ago is exactly the man I always envisioned. Kind, thoughtful, loving and a true gentleman. Nice to know that I wasn't wrong about him. Dena did an excellent job with everything Bobby gave her to work with. So nice having a little bit of the past to remember as well as having a little bit of the present to keep me updated on about Bobbys' life. Thank You Very Much.

Thanks, Bobby, for saving lives, on and off screen!
This book answered questions a lot of fans had all those years ago (are we that old?!). I think the content of this book must reflect the true nature of the person. Telling one's life story is not an easy task, but you and Dena Hill did a remarkable job. Reading this book was both fun and sad; we all have similar moments in our lives and it was nice to share yours, in a sense. Thanks for remembering your fans; we will remember you always and cherish our memories.

Anchors and Eagles
Published in Hardcover by Paul L. Adkisson (01 April, 1998)
Author: Paul L. Adkisson
Average review score:

An Outstanding Chronicle of the Cold War
This is an exciting book for anyone who wants to learn about the "cold war" following the Korean conflict, and before and after the Vietnamese war. This book gives an account of the life of a man who served his country. Paul Adkisson does not hide his feelings behind false bravado or add inflated deeds to impress us. His story is told simply but profoundly in the language of a sailor doing his duty at a time when few of us cared. Paul Adkisson's story is the story of many of us who served during that time. There are no great flashes of adventure nor is the destruction of the world thrwarted by a single act of bold daring-- as one reads in popular fiction. Yet, on every page one learns of the quiet heroism of men doing their duty and living their daily lives. There have been many men like Paul Adkisson but he has taken the time and effort to share his life with us. His personal odyssey is a truly great adventure and should be read by everone. Thank you Paul, for your years of duty and sacrifice. Your life and your story enriches us all.

Outstanding book, the way it was!
Paul Adkisson has for the first time to my knowledge placed in print the way it was in a Navy defending the Republic in the 50's, 60's and 70's. It is hard hitting and pulls no punches. He writes from the perspective of a steam engineer. Totally believable. Early on in Adkissons book I could smell the stack gas and fuel oil, hear the scream of forced draft blowers, feel the unbearable heat in the main engineering spaces that was borne by all, the heaving/rolling deck of a '2100' FLETCHER class destroyer and the feeling of no privacy in cramped/close living quarters. In a way that no other author for me has been able to, Adkisson describes life in the Navy as experienced by all who put to sea for foreign shore in those three decades. I said all!

Did I say totally believable? Well,.....I was reading about myself, I lived it! I salute a fellow engineer and a brother Chief. 4.0! BRAVO ZULU! On a scale of one to ten; 9.95.

Master Chief Adkissons book, Anchors and Eagles; is about a Navy that I married and came to love. A Navy, a sailor and an era that will never exist again in the annals of future naval history.

He Brought My Father Back For Me
I found Paul Adkisson by reading the reviews of this book. I took a chance, wondering if he just happened to serve with my father, Richard Wooton, Chief Master at Arms. When he wrote me back, not only did he surprise me by indicating he knew my father, but told me he knew him well, and told me stories!! My father passed away in January of 1994, and Mr. Adkisson brought him back just by the stories and the e-mails I received from him. He sent me a copy of his book Anchors and Eagles, and I have read it from cover to cover. This is the most truthful, true-to-Navy-life book I have read, and it also reminds me of the years spent traveling with my father throughout his 26-year Navy career. Like my father, Mr. Adkisson has served his country well, and he should be extremely proud. Thank you again...[sincerely]

The integrity of this man is absolutely astonishing. Out of a possible 10, he gets a 15 from me!

Beyond the Grave revised edition : Right Way and the Wrong Way of Leaving Money To Your Children (and Others), The

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - GET THIS BOOK!
I just want to "echo" the reviews of Beyond the Grave found here on Amazon. I was about to get Shenkman's book, but then I read an Amazon review of his book which said to forget the Shenkman book and get the Condon book. Very readable, practical and, if you can believe it, funny! Condon really knows how to get the information across to us regular people. I don't know how the Condon book compares to other inheritance books, but do yourself a favor and start with the Condon book.

Practical advice
I have been looking for a book like this for a while and stumbled across it in the public library. I read it cover to cover in a couple of hours. Easy to read, yet so full of practical info you will be dog-earing each page. I am in my late thirties and have learned so much that I plan to give this book to my parents. The real life scenarios make you think. You'll get wonderful ideas as to how to structure your own inheritance plan and how to approach your parents and help them get the information they need.

Loved It!
I recently bought the book "Beyond the Grave" just after my second parent passed away and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to read about such a morbid subject. I only wish my parents would have taken the advice from the Condons and had left their inheritance equally to me and my 5 siblings so that no feelings would have been hurt when distributing items listed in the family trust. I highly recommend parents of all ages to read this book and use it as a guideline for their living trust.

Ambush at Ruby Ridge : How Government Agents Set Randy Weaver Up and Took His Family Down
Published in Hardcover by Dickens Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Alan W. Bock and Dean R. Koontz
Average review score:

Ambush at Ruby Ridge by Alan Bock is a 10++++++
The photographic section in the middle of the book picturing Sammy Weaver's classmates with targets pinned on their shirts shocks one into the reality that "yes, this really did happen. A fourteen year old was murdered, his little arm shot completely off." The family dog's dead carcass has multiple tank marks from being repeatedly run over. Bock is fair in pointing out that the Weaver's had a different point of view, but hey, isn't that why our forefathers came to this country? It requires some concentration to follow all the documentary but what an amazing chronicle of the great injustice done to this family by Big Brother! Bock is very courageous and I wouldn't be surprised if the government bans the book. After all, the first thing Hitler did was to kill the real journalists. Refreshing in a time when journalists are afraid to speak out for fear of government retaliation. Direct coverage of the true events surrounding Ruby Ridge trials, great photographic section!

This could happen to you.
Well written factual account of the standoff at Ruby Ridge which cost Vicki and Sam Weaver ther lives. This book should be required reading by everyone that thinks the government is fair and just. If this dooesn't make your blood boil, maybe you should check your pulse!

A MUST READ
Ambush at Ruby Ridge is a must read for all young people not to anger them but to educate them as to what can happen when we let Government to go out of control. I feel this book weighed both sides of this issue but no matter what, the US Government came out on the losing end of it. Alan Bock has shown what can happen when we, as citizens, allow the Government to do as they feel fit giving a new meaning to the importance of showing up at the polls and putting capable people into office that will correct these kinds of problems. These type of Ruby Ridge incidents are showing up far too often in our Country.

The consumate guide to anal sexuality, a must read!
This book completely covers the subject of anal eroticism and how to approach it safely and pleasurably. While somewhat daring, a must read for anyone whos interested in anal sex, eroticism, health, etc.. I could'nt recommend it more... END

Anal pleasure 100%
I think this is one of the best books to help a person get intouch with their inner feelings. I think If you want to have anal sex, buy this book, it gives great ways to experience it in its fullest!

Don't Be Ashamed--This Book Celebrates a New Way of Sex!
It's almost a new century--why not make a resolution to explore the thrill of safe anal sex? This is a practical, informative, and mature book. Written by a smart physician who is knowledgeable and experienced himself, I recommended it to a few of my bi and gay male friends. (My wife got curious and ended up sharing it with a close friend of hers, too; it was accepted with relief because so many people are uptight about openly discussing the subject of anal health and pleasure with friends.) Go, ahead--order this book and explore a whole new world. This book will "open up" a new dimension in sexual pleasure for you and your loved one(s).

The Betsy-Tacy Companion: A Biography of Maud Hart Lovelace
Published in Hardcover by Portalington Pr (May, 1995)
Author: Sharla Scannell Whalen
Average review score:

A must-have for all Betsy-Tacy lovers
This book is heaven-sent! While probably not very interesting to anyone who has not read the Bets-Tacy books, this book is a jewel for all those who have. It tells absolutely everything! If photos are what you're after, they're in the Companion. If you want to learn all the details of Maud's real life, you'll also find those. I love the clips of Maud's letters to her friends, and I sorely lament the fact that she burned her diaries. Would she have burned them if she had known how much she'd be loved? This book has all the answers to all the questions you've ever asked. I was ecstatic when I found it, and I hope many more people will find it. It's defiantly not worth ignoring!

A must-have reference for any Betsy-Tacy Fan!
This book is a lot of fun to have around when you're reading or re-reading the Betsy-Tacy series! It tells the stories behind the stories, compares the events in the books to events in Maud's life, and includes wonderful pictures of the real people behind the fictional names.

It is not intended to be a straight-out biography of Maud but rather how her life paralleled Betsy's. The research is detailed and voluminous, and very well done. This kind of a book could have been very tedious and boring, but I didn't find it that way at all. The writing was sprightly and included some humor, and I just really enjoyed paging through it as I re-read the series this summer!

Any Maud or Betsy fan should own this book!

Will the real Betsy and Tacy please stand up?
This book represents an incredible effort that can only be described as a labor of love and a gift to all Betsy-Tacy fans. Sharla Scannell Whalen has done an impressive amount of research, interviewing people connected to the characters MHL wrote about, reading correspondence, examining old newspapers and county records, and recreating even the floor plans of old houses.

Probably no biography could ever answer all of the questions of devoted B-T fans like myself. Short of a personal interview with Maud Hart Lovelace, nothing could probably satisfy our curiousity. Whalen's book, in many ways, is less a biography than a corroboration of the Betsy-Tacy books. In itself, that makes it precious to fans of the series. I liked knowing something about the characters' counterparts. Presumably due to the vagaries of historical research, we learn more about some (e.g. Carney/Marney) than others (e.g. Marguerite/Emily). A few of the episodes most important for understanding Betsy's character and growth (and thus, according to Whalen's well-substantiated argument, Maud's), are not verified - for example, the interlude in Betsy's Wedding when Joe's aunt comes to live with them, prompting Betsy to interrogate her own possessiveness and to expand her ideas of family.

I loved this book, but unfortunately I think its appeal will be largely limited to Betsy-Tacy fans and people interested in children's books. I don't know that it would have been feasible for Whalen to do this, given her interest in documenting the similarities between Betsy's and Maud's lives, but I would have liked to see her set the overlapping stories of their lives in a broader social history context. How much richer the book would have been if we could have understood Betsy's and Maud's girlhoods against a larger picture of early 20th century adolescence. How unique was it, for example, that all of Betsy's friends attended high school, and many of them college, in an era when less than 20% of the school-aged population graduated from high school? This suggests important and interesting things about Betsy's/Maud's family and class background, the economy of Deep Valley/Mankato, and the social mores of her Crowd. This book is so readable that, if it had presented the B-T books not only as a window into Maud Hart Lovelace's life but into the lives of young women of a certain racial, social, and class background in the early 20th century, it could be a huge contribution to the field of women's history. In short, the book is long on description and documentation; I would have only liked to see more analysis.

But there is limited use in bemoaning what a book does not do. What this book does is pretty tremendous. It's truly a pleasure to read, and invaluable to anyone who ever wanted to know what happened to Betsy, Tacy, Carney, Tib, Cab, and Tony after the end of the series.
