Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture
Published in Hardcover by First Media Books (April, 1998)
Authors: Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws
Average review score:

EXCEPTIONAL LOOK INTO ELEKTRA..THE HOUSE THAT JAC BUILT.
"FOLLOW THE MUSIC' is an essential addition to the bookshelves of public and campus libraries, and of everyone in, and around, today's "music industry". This is the musical history tour of Elektra Records, home to The Doors, Judy Collins, Bread, Queen, Tim Buckley, Carly Simon, LOVE, Theodore Bikel, The Incredible String Band, Harry Chapin, Paul Butterfield and dozens of other folk, folk/blues, blues/rock and hard rock acts. Co-author Jac Holzman was the founder and guiding light of this exquisite and unique record label, and he, along with many of his friends, family and associates tell the inside story of the creation and eventual success of Elektra, its classical sibling Nonesuch, along with insights into the artists and folk/pop/music/drug culture of the Fifties, Sixties and early Seventies. This is an extremely well-researched, at times humorous, sad, enlightening, technical and truthful treasure chest of an autobiography. Holzman presents himself a! s an extremely bright, lucid, tasteful and technically talented 'individual', qualities that have made him loved and respected by legions of label honchos, singer/songwriter legends and record album archivists/historians. One of the most entertaining, intelligent and insightful popular music history books of the year, if not the decade.

You must read this book
Jac Holzman has given us a gift with this book, right down to the paper he chose himeself to print it on. If you have any interest in the history of recorded music, the music business, and why we listen to the music we enjoy today, you absolutely must read this book. It's not only a fascinating account of how a major record label came to be, it's a fantastic insight into what goes on behind the scenes in the very quirky world of music business. If you love music and cherish the sounds of the fifties and sixties, from folk to blues, rock to psychedelia, and you haven't read this music giant's first hand account of making so much of it happen for you, you're doing yourself a major disservice. Thank you Jac and Gavan!

It's a great book for folk and rock music fans
Jac Holzman was Elektra Records from it's beginning stages until the mid-70's. what I love about this book, is the format and style, what I call a or autobiography in this case, similar in format to the Bill Graham and David Crosby autobiographies.....in which the author says something, then others that were also there get to have their say as well. It gives you a much more rounded picture of what was happening. Jac, like Bill and David, was not afraid to leave it in when others say something bad about him.... it's a honest and true piece of work. For music fans it's a treat to read about people like Fred Neil and Judy Henske - information you will not find anywhere else about these semi-obscure folk legends. Most of all, it's a reflection of an era that no longer remains except in our memories. Or if like myself, you were not there the first time around, you will be there while reading this book.

Get a Grip! : A Take-Charge Approach to Living With Arthritis
Published in Hardcover by J. P. Tarcher (11 April, 2002)
Authors: Amye Leong and Joe Layden
Average review score:

An inspiration to all!
Amye Leong is a survivor and an inspiration. Her book, "Get a Grip", is the best kind of self-help book...personal story with practical help mixed in. As a fellow sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis, I've read plenty of self-help books over the years. I wish Amye's book had been out years ago...I wouldn't had wasted so much time reading useless books. This book is essential if you suffer from any chronic disease.

DIAGNOSED WITH A CHRONIC ILLNESS? READ THIS BOOK NOW!
Congratulations to Amye Leong. She is a true crusader for those of us who have rheumatoid arthritis, or any other form of chronic illness. Having met Amye over 10 years ago at a National Arthritis Foundation House of Delegates Conference, my life was enriched by her enthusiasm, guts, and fight to win this battle with arthritis. Amye's efforts to make the public aware of the devastation arthritis can cause to oneself, one's family, friends and the community is sure to make an impact on how this disease is perceived by everyone. Since the publication of her book, the CDC came out with new statistics (10-24-02) that now more than 70 million Americans have a form of arthritis - one in three people ! Thank you Amye for all your hard work. It is through your painful suffering that others can now avoid such ordeals. I am glad you wrote this book and I am glad to call you my friend. It is because of our disease that we met and for that I am eternally grateful. This book is an excellent source of inspiration and hope for anyone who has arthritis or who loves someone that suffers with arthritis.

Get A Grip
I met Amye Leong a number of years ago when she came to me to receive massage therapy which supports her continued mobility. I came to respect her, thoroughly enjoy her and admire her for her life's accomplishments. So when "Get A Grip" was published I was excited to read it, to know Amye's story in greater detail. And yes, the book is very readable, inspiring and filled with the joy that Amye can hold not despite her disease, but WITH her disease. What I was not prepared for was how topical the book is for me as I deal with having a very different chronic autoimmune disease. I had recently sunk into a depression which is a side effect of my physical illness, a response to the ways my life has changed and how I had allowed myself to become a victim of this disease and not, as Amye so strongly addresses in Get A Grip, becoming a participating partner in my health care. Amye Leong has spent many years touching people's lives through her advocacy for, and commitment to the Rheumatoid Arthritis community. Now through her writing she is touching and inspiring so many more! While it is understandable that Get A Grip is directed to people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, I believe it would be intensely appropriate, helpful and perhaps even necessary for anyone dealing with a chronic illness, and even those struggling with a life challenge.

I Closed My Eyes: Revelations of a Battered Woman
Published in Paperback by Hazelden Information Education (01 September, 1999)
Author: Michele Weldon
Average review score:

A Must Read For All Women
Michele Weldon does an amazing job of grabbing the reader with her story. It takes an incredible amount of courage to tell the world that your picture perfect life and marriage was a charade -- that you were abused for years by a man who appeared to be "the loving husband." What really touched me most was the ability I felt to relate to the author, as the life she describes is not too far from my own real-life experience.

Warning for those of you are presently in an abusive relationship or recently leaving one -- this is so well-written and hits so close to home that it may trigger flashbacks. Nevertheless, it is a must-read for not just victims of domestic violence, but for all women.

Superb Book, Invaluable Resource
This personal account of an abusive marital relationship and the healing, transforming journeying out of it is beautifully written and deeply moving. It is all at once heart-wrenching, inspiring, and empowering, and it offers a message of courage, hope, faith, and love. Michele Weldon effectively puts to rest the many fallacies surrounding domestic violence in our culture, and her story illustrates the fact that willingness/ability to respond to domestic violence and abuse continues to be a major challenge for the church in 2000. I CLOSED MY EYES is an invaluable resource for a variety of contexts today, e.g., in seminary pastoral care & counseling courses, clinical social work degree programs. It should be on the bookshelves of our churches and synagogues, domestic abuse shelters, and public libraries. It would be an enormously good read for medical students and interns in our teaching hospitals across the country who, sadly, get little education and training regarding the complex family and societal issues surrounding domestic violence and abuse. All who minister to or care for people caught in the cycle of domestic violence and abuse will learn from this book.

Great for a woman who has left an abusive marriage
Thank you Michele Weldon for writing your journey through living and leaving an abusive husband. ---

Her writing is encouraging and honest. The writing style kept me reading. The way she put into words the joy of leaving the cycle of abuse despite the hardship that it may bring is just great!

The Billion-Dollar Molecule: One Company's Quest for the Perfect Drug
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (February, 1994)
Author: Barry Werth
Average review score:

A excellent cross between business text and fiction
I read this book a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. Over time I have forgetten about it. But lately I've been doing research into new business creation and remembered this well written book. Many of the dry lessons of academic research are presented in a case study that reads like fiction.

Fast-paced and Insightful
I first read this book nearly two years ago as research for a novel I was writing. Recently, I turned to it once more to pick up a few terms and found myself reading chapter after chapter!

This non-fiction tale has enough twists and turns and drama to match any thriller on the market. An informative and engaging tale of a pharmaceutical start-up and the people involved. Joshua is interesting enough that the book could have been solely about him, but he isn't the only one. All of the players in this ego-driven mega-drama are interesting on many levels.

Who would I reccomend this book to? Anyone who likes a well-told story. A background in medicine is not needed, and neither is a knowledge of business practices. All you need to enjoy this book is a brain . . . and a night light because you'll be reading this book deep into the night.

reads like a thriller
awesome book about a start up in the pharmaceutical industry. a must for everybody who works in this field or who thinks about founding a company in the chemical/pharmaceutical/biochemical field. a must read!

The Cheapskate Monthly Money Makeover
Published in Mass Market Paperback by St. Martin's Press (March, 1995)
Author: Mary Hunt
Average review score:

If you're broke or having money problems, buy this book now!
Has worrying about money or paying your bills ever kept you up at night?

Me, too. Until I found this book.

About 7 years ago, our family was suffering from unbelievable money problems. Depressed and confused, I decided to stop by the bookstore and browse the personal finance section. There was only one problem. I didn't have twenty or thirty dollars to buy money management advice. I decided to get Mary's book and could not believe how many great examples and strategies she gave for reducing debt.
By following Mary's instructions, our family quickly began reducing our debt and wiped out almost $ 20,000 of credit card bills within a few years.
Her book is my money "Bible" and like scriptures in a holy work, I have highlighted paragraphs on almost every page that give insights into a subject that had always been beyond my control.

This book saved my marriage and brought me peace.
I highly recommend it. . . to everyone.

Horray for Cheapskates!
I had purchased a book (The Financially Confident Woman) by Mary Hunt, and HATED it!! If I had realized this book was by the same author, I would never have bought it - luckily, I didn't. It is a comprehensive, well-written, and most of all - non-"preachy" book which has been a huge help to me in controlling my debt. I recommend it highly. Read it once, read it twice, things will begin to click and you will realize it CAN be done. Thanks, Mary Hunt.

What a wonderful resource! Can I give it 10+??!!
Having experienced a consumer-debt nightmare of my own, the author's story of overcoming $100,000 in personal debt was inspiring! I wish I'd found this resource before our family wound up deeply in debt. The burden of financial problems can cause havoc with even the best of marriages--financial problems can adversely effect nearly every area of your life. If you're struggling to stay ahead of the collection agencies and their not-so-nice phone calls; if you're becoming an expert at juggling past-due bills; and if your family relationships are starting to suffer from the stress and strain of your financial situation..... PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! It not only can save your financial future, but it can also restore your peace-of-mind and possibly heal your marriage, as well...

A Must read for Girls of all Ages!
This real life look at corporate America is a must for every library. This is the kind of book we all wish we had when we were starting out in the corporate world. All the interviews and real life experiences can only help our corporate culture and we all must thank Susan Solovic for her excellent compilation of stories and facts!!!! A must read!!!!

Great Read for Women Striving to Reach Their Personal Best
If you are a women interested in maximizing your career success and increasing your personal power and self esteem, this is the book for you! Susan Solovic does an amazing job of combining real world examples of women who have done just that - from overcoming obstacles and trials to making a name for themselves because of their tenacity and passion for power and success. Women of all ages, you too can enjoy this career success and this book is a great starting point! Enjoy it - I sure did!

Very Useful And Provocative Book
Susan Wilson Solovic has written a very useful and often provocative book for working women of all ages. Unlike some "career guides" that focus only on statistics and theory, Ms. Solovic interviewed successful women who have been "in the trenches" of the business world in addition to using great examples from her own varied and successful career. This approach not only makes the book a "good read" but it provides "nuts and bolts" practical advice on how women can be more effective in the business world today. This book was written from a unique point of view by a woman "who's done it all" and who now wants to make the road a bit smoother for other women in business.

Heaven Is a Playground

Author: Rick Telander
Average review score:

A classic sports book about inner city teens and basketball.
I joined Ace/Tempo Books, a paperback division of Grosset & Dunlap, as an editor back in 1976. The first hardcover book I purchased for paperback reprint was Rick Telander's "Heaven Is a Playground." I was taken by Rick's story-telling abilities, his eloquence and his love for the ghetto kids who saw basketball as their only ticket out. This was something more than a sports book. This was a book about an inner city world I knew little about, a world that Rick had experienced first hand. It was also a book I had to publish at Ace/Tempo. I am proud that I did, and I am happy to see that the book has been brought back into print after all these years. I highly recommend it.

excellent
possibly the best book I've ever read. It provides a rarely seen insight into the world of city basketball. Definetly a "must read"!

The sociology of inner-city basketball
With this book Rick Telander has captured the sociology of inner-city basketball. These kids do not see basketball as merely a sport but as a means to an end. It is a ticket to a better way of life that can become an obsession for some (such as Clavin Franks). In this book Telander points out all that is good about basketball and some of the bad. This book should be read by all basketball fans, especially those who dream of playing in the NBA. If you liked this book you should also check out the movie "Soul in the Hole." It is a movie about Brooklyn playground legend Edward "Booger" Smith.

For All the Wrong Reasons
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (April, 2002)
Author: Louise Bagshawe
Average review score:

Sexy, 'Can't put it down for a second' Summer Read.
This book was one of those wonderful books that upset you when it is over because you must say goodbye to the characters. At first I was sure the herione was pure fluff, but the growth and integrity she exhibits made it so enjoyable, I defy anyone not to respect her courage by the end of the book. Very empowering to women, yet Bagshawe is ruthless about her character's flaws. The hero, 'Micheal' is enough to make any woman gasp and pant a little even though at times she wants to throttle him. It is a rip roaring ride! Where can we get more of her books?

Guilty Pleasures
Wow! What a read! I couldn't put this thing down. I felt like a ten year-old with a flashlight under my covers. I was sneaking in bits of this every chance I got -- in the bathroom, on the subway, even in my car at stoplights.
Bagshawe has a real winner here. This book is sexy, funny, mercilessly incisive about the New York scene, and very very well written. Her sexy, panting characters actually live and breathe. We care about what happens to them, and we can't wait for them to jump back between the sheets. Man! The sex! Explicit stuff written from a woman's perspective is hard to find, but she's got it. I confess I was blushing as I read it, but I couldn't stop! I can't wait to read her next one, and I sure wish they'd publish her earlier books here in the states. Bagshawe, keep them coming!

Sexy, Captivating & Fun
I have stumbled upon a great new writer and her name is Louise Bagshawe. Way more fun than a chick-lit book, FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS is a tale of deceit, romance and cattiness in the social circles of Manhattan. Louise Bagshawe has a gift for drawing the reader in and never letting go until the very last page.

FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS is the story of Diana Verity. The novel opens with the very demure, very British, and very princess-like Diana on the morning of her wedding to Ernie Foxton. Ernie has just been named head of a huge publishing house in New York, and after the wedding, the two are heading to New York to live. It doesn't take Diana long to find her footing in the top social circles in Manhattan. Her weekly dinner parties are a hit, she's getting all sorts of great publicity, and making good friends with the highest ranking society ladies in NY. What Diana doesn't realize is that her life, her marriage and her social standing is all one big game, and it seems she is playing it a little too well for some people's tastes. She ends up finding out about her husband's affair, and refuses to sit back and take it quietly. She leaves and tries to make it on her own assuming Ernie will come running after her. He doesn't, but Diana soon realizes that maybe she doesn't need Ernie. Will Diana pick herself back up and regain her place in society? Will she find the one true love she never had in Ernie? All these questions are answered, and getting to the answers is all the fun. Highly recommended!

Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School
Published in Paperback by Three Rivers Press (November, 2000)
Author: Rebecca Rupp
Average review score:

Excellent resource!
This book is excellent for those thinking about homeschooling, those just starting out and even those who have been doing it a while! Rebecca Rupp explains different styles of homeschool from "school-at-home" to "unschooling" and the pros and cons of each. She discusses what expectations there are for what children should learn and accomplish in each grade level (from preschool to highschool). The thing that Rupp does best, however, is share a wealth of resources. From software to books, from weblinks to packaged curriculum, there is a wealth of knowledge contained in this relatively small and unintimidating volume.

Great for all parents.
Whether you home school or not this book will help you identify what your child should be learning and how you can help.

This book gives you general guidelines of what is taught and more importantly the skills they should have, for example by the end of kindergarten they should be able to recognize and repeat simple patterns and they should be able to throw, catch and kick a ball; by the end of 1st grade they should be able to listen to, repeat and follow two step directions and they should be able to throw and catch a beanbag.

This book is well-written, it is easy to find what your looking for and assess if your on track.

I refer to this book constantly!
As a homeschool mom as well as author of homeschool materials, I feel it is important to make sure that I cover all the bases and don't leave anything out. I've seen a lot of scope and sequences, but most of them are so vague, they don't tell me anything. Home Learning, on the other hand, is extremely detailed. It also has high standards, rather than being watered down education. I know that if we cover what is listed in Home Learning, that we'll be right where we should be and doing even better than what is expected in the public schools.

It's not the kind of book you read once and pack away. It's a book that you keep pulling out again and again.

Blind Faith: The Miraculous Journey of Lula Hardaway, Stevie Wonder's Mother
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (01 November, 2002)
Authors: Dennis Love and Stacy Brown
Average review score:

Loved It
I enjoyed this book. So much so that I read it within one sitting. It was just that good. SO good that I wanted more info. It was good to know the REAL deal about Stevie's early life and about Lula, who really went through some ordeals. I loved the aunt who took her in but her "good" husband the "Deacon" was an out and out hypocrite. I just lost respect for him. Her 1st husband(Stevie's father) wasn't much better either. I understood her feelings when Stevie was about to be signed with Motown. You could understand why she wanted to not give him the opportunity, because of her own insecurities and limitations, yet, despite her own misgivings, she overcame them and allowed her son to become one of the most beloved musical genuises living on the planet today. My only gripe with the book is what became of the other five children she had. What did they do with their lives?? And why did they rush so much at the end with Lula's life? I would have loved to hear more though I understand one's right to privacy. All in all, a good book.

Amazing story of Stevie Wonder AND his mother
LovedĀ  the taped version of BLIND FAITH: THE MIRACULOUS
JOURNEY OF LULA HARDAWAY, STEVIE WONDER'S MOTHER
by Dennis Love and Stacy Brown . . . it is an authorized biography
of Wonder and his mother, based on interviews with the both
of them.

I had listened to Wonder's music over the years, but did not know
too much about his background . . . how he achieved the
success that he did is nothing short of amazing, especially
given his blindness.

He comes across as a talented worker not fazed by his blindness,
along with being a loving son, a prankster and a womanizer . . . his
mother's tale of devotion was particularly moving, though I would
have liked to have heard more about what happened to her
after her son's success . . . I'm also curious as to what
happened to his brothers since very little information is given
about them.

The narration by Viola Davis was excellent; so much so, in fact,
that I want to find more about her . . . I'll be curious to find out if

she has read other books and/or appeared on screen.

A striking story
This is a story that I would recommend to anyone. The story of Lula Hardaway is just as compelling as the story of Stevie Wonder's magical career. Lula Hardaway proves that mother's will do any and everything for the survival of her children. There's nothing like a mother's love and Blind Faith is the perfect example.
